Just incredible eyepiece for the money. Would rather use 10 of his at $40 dollars that 1 TV at $400. Thanks Harry!!

Harry Siebert Optics Standard 18mm
As I continue to use this eyepiece I regret giving it only an 8 initially for a couple of reasons...

1) The coma I mensioned in my original post was in fact largely due to miscolmination of my newt. There is still a small amount of coma at f/6 around the edges, but it was significantly reduced following a total recolmination of both the secondary and primary optics.

2) Every time I look through this eyepiece I continued to be wow'd by the images I see. I no longer use my 25mm MA - this eyepiece gives me almost the same real FOV with more magnificaiton, contrast, and less false color. It has become one of my most used eyepieces over the past couple of months.

In order to revise the rating, I'm giving it a 10 this time for an average of 9. I feel the 9 is a more acurate rating given the short eye relief, which is about the only reason I do not give this a 10. If the double rating creates a problem with the moderators (are there any?) then please change one of my ratings to 9 and the other to "comment".

Harry Siebert Optics Standard 18mm
Very impressive eyepiece, especially considering the price. Harry actually implies this as a 3 element EP (configuration unspecified) on his E-Bay listings but he told me via e-mail it is actually three elements from one of his other focal lengths plus an additional field lens to modify the focal length (total elements = 4). Contrast is excellent, no detectable color distorion at all, top notch images. Basically these are every bit as good as his advertisement says they are. The fact that this was achieved with 3-4 elements is noteworthy in that Harry has found a way to get probably 80-90% of the performance of more comples widefield designs with half the glass and ~1/4 the cost. Only nits: At f/6 there is some Coma near the edge of the field, but probably 90% of the view is tack sharp. These are home made eyepieces meaning you won't get any bragging rights for pretty oculars. They are sold w/o caps or cases, so you'll need to find protection on your own. Eye relief is tight for an 18mm eyepiece, but not uncomfortable. A 10 for value, but going strictly on performance, an easy 8.

As a follow-up to my earlier rating and further testament to the abilities of this eyepiece, last night I was able to split all four components of the "double double" star Epsilon Lyra with the 18mm at 67x with an 8" f/6 Newt. In a recent thread on sci.asto.amature, most people obtaining similar results report using refractors coupled with high end Pentax, Televue, or University Optics Abbe Orthoscopic eyepieces.
