This anime was recommended o me by a couple of people and showed a lot of promise, however the story felt a bit drawn out and in general, I just couldn't really get into it despite viewing it 2 or 3 times. The animation varies from OK to atrocious at times.

Overall pretty disappointing, but might me OK to watch as long as you don't set your expectations too high.

the hakkenden is one of, the if not the most enjoyable series i own.
though dark and terribly depressing at times, it has a very engrossing story. the animation for the most part is supurb and with a samurai flick you just can't miss.

I just feel I have to warn everyone, if you're going to buy Hakkenden, stick with the subtitled version. The dub is far inferior, more so than usual with anime dubs I felt.
Pretty good anime of this genre. Sort of does its own thing and has a surreal feel to it. I like the idea of the magic beads linking the very different warriors, and the symbolism of the dogs in the show.

The animation is not that bad, the story is a bit
confusing but nice, I love all samurai movies/series
(Ninja Scroll, Yoma, Rurouni Kenshin, Yotoden, etc..)

SO SO I can say that
Ninja Scroll was much better it is short only 70 min
and had alot more action and special effect.
NOT great and a very long boring series there are 6 in all 1 hour each?

Difficult story. The animation ranges from poor to excellent. If you liked Ninja Scroll you'll probably like this one to.

This is an EXCEPTIONAL anime. Though based on a novel, it is incredibly original and unique among anime. The art also tends to be more realistic and down to earth than in most, with fewer bizarre hair styles and colors, regular eyes, and in the end the characters actually look *gasp* Japanese. The story in and of itself is compelling, drawing one in immediately. It can be confusing, but more than makes up for this by being fascinating. The bonds shared between the characters are a rarity. This is quite a find among anime, and a must for anyone who wants to see a truly great series.

Yeah, the art sucks in a couple episodes, but in most it's great...

Having initially watched this in Japanese without english subtitles, and realising the sheer mindfucking qualities of the storyline, it has come as something of a revelation that there is, in fact, a logical storyline to this title.
