Description:GSO eyepieces are known for their particularly good image quality at a bargain price. They feature a modern optical design that allows you to use them on "fast" telescopes - telescopes with a short focal ratio - with respectable field sharpness.

I own an Orion SkyView Pro 8 EQ (1000mm FL f/5) and I needed a wide field eyepiece for larger objects, star hopping, and a larger exit pupil. This eyepiece easily contains the ~2 deg FOV for the Pleides in my scope. It works well with my Rigel Quickfinder's outer 2 deg ring. I can use the 2 deg FOV to gauge how far I’m starhopping on my computer printout charts. The 6mm exit pupil (30mm/f5) makes for a very nice bright view that was wonderful under dark/moonless skies last month.

I had originally bought an Orion 35mm DeepView, but was extremely disappointed with the aberrations over 80% of the FOV. The DeepView does not handle f5 well at all. For the same price (~$60), I picked up the GSO 30mm SuperView. I had both eyepieces for a few days (before returning the DeepView), and I can say that the SuperView is the clear winner.

The SuperView is not optically perfect (it is not a TeleVue - nor have I been able to compare it with a TeleVue - if I had a TeleVue, I wouldn't be commenting on this eyepiece) – but it does a very nice job at providing a widefield at a budget price. There is at least one other advantage the SuperView has over the DeepView – smaller exit lens. Well – yes, this is a 30mm eyepiece and the DeepView is a 35mm eyepiece. The advantage became apparent when I attempted to use them both from the extremely poor light conditions of my backyard under a utility pole light. The eyeguard on the SuperView is smaller in diameter, fits nicely around my eye, and keeps the light out. The eyeguard on the DeepView is much larger, allowed light to creep in (even in less extreme environments), and required the use of at least one hand to block light. Also, the rubber eyeguard on the DeepView seems flimsy and cheap compared with the thicker SuperView eyeguard.

One caveat – my SuperView arrived from SmartAstronomy (an eBay purchase), and the lenses were ‘loose’ – producing a heart-stopping clicking sound as the eyepiece was turned and twisted. I discovered that the bottom half of the SuperView screws off, giving easy access to the top half of the eyepiece where I needed to carefully use two small screwdrivers to tighten down the bottom ‘collar’ – and that fixed it. One person I told this to commented that some people prefer ‘loose optics’ to avoid pinching of the lenses – but I found the loose optics to be very disturbing (almost tempted to return the eyepiece).

Got one yesterday, tried it last night in F5 dob - good contrast, field curvature not too bad, stars pretty sharp in central 70-80% of field, gulls in the outer quarter are small and a little astigmatism there but no big arcs. Solidly made, nice look to the coatings. I've used eps costing triple that didn't perform as well. Excellent value at current prices.

What a wonderful Eyepiece for the buck!!! Contrast is good, field is mostly flat ( when used with my 12" F5 Orion Dobsonian no relevant pincushion). Only the very edge of the field is a bit soft. When used with the matching 2" barlow( which is of excellent quality)this eyepiece really shines.

Recommended for budget minded!!!!
