Edmund Scientific RKE 15mm
This is a very comfortable to use optically sharp eyepiece. Its a LOT better than some people make it out to be.

If Nyke found it "murky" at the edge of the field its probably his telescope.

I've tested this eyepiece head on against a 16mm Clave', a 16mm Brandon,a 16mm Koenig, a 15mm Televue Plossl and a 14mm Pentax XL. It holds up well against all of these eyepieces. Whereas the 15mm TV puts up very blue images, the RKE throws up an image that is shaded more to the red like Brandons and Pentax XL's. To me this coloring looks more natural, but I honestly don't know which color shading is more "correct". The moon, for instance is much more brown in color and red stars are more red. I like this.

Overall, it does not transmit quite as much light as the multicoated eyepieces in this group, but its only a smudgen behind. Its not quite as sharp as the $239 Clave', which as far as image quality is probably in my mind the winner of this group, but not by a clear margin....I'm still testing. It's not quite as sharp at the center of the field as the Brandon, but its significantly sharper at the edge of the field.

By the way, its not a Kellner at all, it is an Edmund Optical proprietary "RKE" design. The lenses are set up completely different. It has substantially more eye relief than Kellners and is substantially sharper at the edge of the field. Maybe Nyke confused this eyepiece with an old kellner. The RKE's have substantially more field of view than the UO,s I've compared them with.

I think all the RKE's are all an outstanding value and make a great set with the custom case Edmund sells for them.

Edmund Scientific RKE 15mm
I have all five RKE (8, 12, 15, 21, 28) and love their performance. They seem clearer, more transparent, and sharper than any famous widefields. I use them in my TV binoVue in lunar, planetary, Solar H-alpha work and on some brighter DSO. Highly recommended.

Edmund Scientific RKE 15mm
Only average at best. Fairly sharp but edges murky. There are much better pieces out there for little more. ie UO orthos, Meade 4000's

Edmund Scientific RKE 15mm
I've owned the complete set of RKEs for over a decade. They are well made and threaded for filters. They are sharp edge to edge, no noticable distortion and bright. These are not kelner type eyepieces, I have two kelners and the RKEs are far superior. They are nearly identical to the plossels I have, a bit brighter and a little more eye relief, but a slighty narrower field of view. All said, I think these are the cheapest good quality eyepieces available and a good value.

Edmund Scientific RKE 15mm
These RKEs are absolutely, positively the best value (price/performance), and in the top 2-3 in absolute performance (performance w/o refernce to price) in lunar and planetary eyepieces. Ultra sharp, ultra high contrast, extremely good resolution and absence of internal reflections.

They are no longer sold by Edmund Scientific, but are now sold by Edmund Industrial Optics. The price has crept up over the years from the $35 range to the $55. Only Zeiss/Jena Orthos and possible Televue Plossls are better for lunar and planetary studies. These absolutely "smoke" the various 5-element plossl designs (Ultima, Parks GS-5, Meade Ser. 4000) and the ghosty perrenial favorite UO Optics Orthos. Especially if you find them used, snap up a whole set.
