This scope is pretty nice, although I wish I would have gone with the PDHQ. The views are quite sharp on the planets and allow for some structure in DSO's. The darker the site the better!

It is very easy to manage with one person. A telrad is a must with this scope. I live in a humid area, so dew heaters are helpful, mainly for the secondary mirror. It dews up on long nights.

Great beginner scope as long as you know a little of the sky.

Discovery DHQ 8" f/6
Bought my Discovery 8" f/6 in November 2000, with 25mm and 10mm generic plossls. Set up was easy, and I enjoyed using it from the beginning. I've observed Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn (haven't tried Uranus or Neptune). Viewed many Messier objects. I've been having spectacular views of Mars this spring (2003) with a 4mm Radian and a 7mm Siebert/2x Barlow combo. I collimated the scope initially with a collimating eyepiece, I found the directions hard to understand and my results weren't great. I bought a laser collimator and was much happier with the results. I did a crude mirror cleaning once with a mop handle on which I taped some papertowels wetted with Windex, put a few small scratches(only-miraculously) in the mirror. Star tests I've done since then show roughness in the mirror, but I've split Algieba in Leo and Castor, seen moon transits on Jupiter and shadow transits. The mount has a little stickiness in the altitude, which is enough that I don't need a counterbalance when using my Radian. The 6x30 finder has never focused well, actually it comes closest when I'm looking through it without my glasses. I bought this one for $399. I've enjoyed it always, even when the collimation was off and the mirror has slight scratches. I can look at a random area of sky and be amazed by the variety in colors of stars, minor open clusters and double stars, even at low power.

Discovery DHQ 8" f/6
Recieved my 8" F7 Discovery scope, Helix collimator and 2" OU barlow from Helix 2 months ago and have enjoyed all of it.

Optics: Excellent, mirrors are first rate. Views of the planets are bright and clear, even in the worst conditions I can see bands on Jupiter and Saturn. Add a Kendrick dew shield to block out any stray light from street lights.

Focuser: 2" that is smooth(even in cold Minnesota winters) with good 1 1/4" adaptor, no backlash.

Eyepiece and Finder: never used the discovery eyepiece or finder, instead used different 2" eyepieces and Telrad finder.

Base: Alright, but went to Home Depot to get 2 springs, 2 metal knob and connected them to the base and the tension controller knob. This solved any balancing problems I had with my larger eyepieces and barlow.

I just got the 8inch f6 version for 398 delivered with a telrad, nothing else. Initial reaction. The base came to me broken but usable, the 1.25 inch adapter was also bad. The 2inch focuser, that is standard now is really not that great. Collimating this thing is not easy and the instructions are a joke. For customer serice, I am still waitng now for two weeks to get my replacement parts. Initial star test looked ok however the collimation I could not get perfect even with my buddy who has been in this hobby for 20 years and owns 10 scopes. For 398 delivered its a good quick look scope. The base on this thing really is not that great the tube rubs against the sides.
