The 5 inch f-15 D&G(homemade O.T.A) is a stunning lens. Perfect star test despite a bit of false colour.
Planetary performance excellent. Deep sky views are also stunning for the aperture. Images are so good it draws one to the eyepiece.

Superb lens. Beautifully polished and well coated.

Delivers stunning contrast and image sharpness. Colour correction superb for achromat. Some minor colour around bright stars and venus and jupiter.

Detail in Jupiters belts amazing. Star images textbook perfect on both sides of focus. At 312 X stars show 2 diffraction rings the 2nd very faint.

Sperical correction at leaast 1/8th wave with mirror diagional in. If looking for Apo performance on a budget this is the way to go.

Comes in push-pull cell very easy to mount on telescope.

Some delays experienced getting lens but wait worth it.

I purchased my 5" f15 D&G, used, for a very reasonable price. Put it on a early 90s vintage Meade 750 mount. (Handles it well)
This is an older scope without the Astrophysics focuser or collimatable cell.

Most of my observing time is spent with the moon and planets. This is what this scope was made for. Using Radian or ortho eps powers of 60-70x per inch are common and on very steady nights 80-100x can be employed before the image begins to breakdown.

Last thursday the seeing was excellent (9-10). Using a 4mm Radian, giving 476x, Saturn was knife edge sharp. The Cassini division displayed real width and the Encke Gap flirted in and out of visibility. The surface was a very pleasing light yellow/brown and banding was easily visible.

Using the same ep with a Sirrus MV20 filter I turned the scope to Jupiter. Yes even at this focal length a little color is evident. But Wow! what a view. More detail then I would care to sketch.

Yes I reallize that the resolution of a 5" lens has it's limits and after a certain magnification your really not "seeing" anymore detail but for my old eyes bigger is better as long as the image is sharp and the mount is stable.

The moon is spectacular thru this scope. My favorite ep for lunar viewing is a Nagler 9mm type 1 (212x). The wide field view is tack sharp and really gives the impression of hovering over the surface.

All in all what can I say. This specimen of D&Gs 5" f15 has excellent optics. There is a very small amount of color that only shows up on very bright objects and this can easily be taken care of with a minus violet filter. It's big, long and alittle on the heavy side. (7+' with dew shield, 30+ lbs with everything on it) Your not going to like it in the wind. I consider the minimum mount to be a LXD750, G11 or equivalent. It's very portable if you have the room in you rig. Set up time is less then 15 minutes.

For those of us that can't afford an apo this must be the next best thing.

From the clear dark skies of Northeast Nevada,

An excellent well polished lens. 5 inch f-15 version.Planetary performance is excellent. Deep sky performance surprisingly good. A solid 10 although tube is very long. Mount needed for one of these scopes is substantial for steady high powered viewing. False colour is barely seen even on mars. it is not obtrusive.
Lunar viewing is astonishing for a 5 inch aperture.
