Crutchfield
I like dealing with a company that can give me the answer or data I need to make the educated decision. I work too much to keep up with the "always changing" electronics business and thier people take the time to make sure that I get what's appropriate for "me". I hate retails stores because they know about as much as a person on the street and always recommend to me what pays them the most. I hate sales tax and waiting, so thier fast shipping fits my lifestyle perfect and it doesn't cost me a thing to send it back if there's ANY problem. The web isn't always as pretty as it looks, but in my 24 years of dealing with them(pre-internet..that's right), nothing but a good taste in my mouth. Keep up the good job Crutchfield.

I gave them an 9 only because their prices could be lower. But their service is superb, the best I've ever used. On my last order, (which was handled exactly like the other dozen or so orders I've done with them over tha last 15 years), they were polite, answered all my questions, charged only $4.50 for 2nd Day Air, and sent a complicated order perfectly. They provided a useful A/V connection guide with free cable labels. What planet are the people who hate them so much from? These guys are outstanding, pure and simple. If it means so much to you to save a couple of percent, then go to Fry's, get treated like a criminal by the snaggle-toothed junkies working there and leave Crutchfield alone.

Outstanding service and shipping. Prices can be beaten most anywhere on the web. But, there are no worries when you buy.

Crtuchfields is OK. But I have found better service and MUCH lower prices at Speed & Sound, http://www.speedsound.com/, which happens to be in Brooklyn N.Y. But they are a very good operation anyway, and can make meaningful suggestions to help you buy a well balanced and high value system. I'll never actually buy from Crutchfield again. Although I might talk to them about it, just to pick their brains, so to speak.

Look, Critchfield is a classic trade-off. Their phone reps know their stuff & are polite, and it is a legitimate, honest business. As others have pointed out, you PAY for this-imo more than you should have to in many instances. Ithink there has to be a middle ground between the totally fly by night "Brooklyn NY" style places that are a real gamble, and a Crutchfield that, while very legitimate, has high margins for an online retailer.

Crutchfield
Crutchfield is probably the best combination of services, prices, and selecion that you will find in a mail-order company. They are by no means perfect, but the saying "you get what you pay for" certainly applies. I have been a customer for several years, and continue to order from them. When I can find a better deal or a product they don't offer (I also use an excellent high-end discount store, Magnolia), I do that.
Flat-rate shipping prices and free returns with no upfront money are
unprecedented. Shipping is fast. I never find myself waiting for a product. The phone staff almost always knows what they're talking about, which is more than you will see at most mail-order or discount stores. The 30-day return policy takes the risk out of long-distance buying. I recently walked out of a discount store and away from a $200 price break, because the owner had a no-return polcy. This is not acceptable! In addition, many companies gouge you for shipping, handling, taxes, etc. to take away the difference of any "discount" you got.
All these negative comments I have read about Crutchfield having high prices are a bunch of nonsense! Have you ever heard of Minimum Advertised Price{MAP}? Their prices are NEVER any higher then that, which is generally as low as a retailer is allowed to publicly offer for a product. They still always sell at lower than MSRP, and they always have the Outlet available to buy returns at discounts, and also the Scratch and Dent deals. These are as good as any deals you will find, and the warranties and return policies still apply. It should be noted that I am kind of cheap, and will always shop, and not pay full price, just because I gotta have something.
Unlike many discount merchants, Crutchfield offers not only entry-to-mid level products, but also in many cases the best that a manufacturer has to offer. This makes their operation very competative with any type electronics retail venue, with good selecion, prices, and service.
I do have one current complaint, though, and the reason I cannot give them a 9 or 10 rating. I just purchased a Sony receiver at a closeout price, there only being 5 left when I ordered it. It arrived, right on schedule, as usual. When I unpacked the Sony box, though, I saw a gouge in the cardboard. Then, before I even got the unit plugged in, I noticed there was a capacitor broken off and rattling around inside. I am sure it is not a factory error, and was quite possibly caused by Crutchfield warehouse mishandling. I called right away to get an exchange, only to find that they had been sold out! I requested that I be able to exchange for the unit that took its place, knowing that this is quite a common practice, and was told there was no way that could be done! I felt they should have given the benefit if the doubt. So, I have to settle for taking it in to a repair shop, a unit that was brand-new, sealed-in-the-box! This does not settle well with me. Hopefully, they will change their policy on this, at least for someone who has spent so many hundreds of dollars in past years!
Needless to say, I will think twice before buying another discontinued item from these guys, and will spend more time looking at other options. Despite this one black mark, Crutchfield is overall a top-notch company, and deserves to be tried out, and all these rediculously negative comments should certainly not be taken seriously. Keep up the good work and improvements, guys!

As a former employee of the Crutchfield Corporation, I feel it was definately a good stepping stone for where I'm at today, but the company, from a corporate aspect sucks. The shipping prices are great, and not having to pay sales tax is also a good thing... but from there, it ends. Granted, they do feature some products at decent products, it's not a good company to work for and I will never support them in any way. I was railroaded out of employment because of management. If you are a white male, you can work your way up to a VP position; if not, forget it. They are too slow to move on the growing internet and Bill isn't quite the Horatio Alger the HR Dept. makes him out to be. They underpay their employees and attempt to make up for it with benefits that aren't really worth much. I remember asking one of my coworkers if they would ever buy anything from Crutchfield if they didn't work there, and she said no... because she couldn't afford it. I'm very happy I worked there because it taught me a lot about the corporate world, and how not to run a company.

Personally, I find it funny that someone who couldn't spell "definately" (definitely) would complain about not being able to reach the VP level of the company. As a ten year employee of Crutchfield, I have seen most of our major competitors lay off, and force pay cuts on their employees. Not here. We have had pay freezes, but I have never seen an employee let go due to anything other than incompetence. Perchance if the person who posted this message wasn't disgruntled about superior talent passing them by, they wouldn't have trashed the company. As for the comment about white males, I haven't seen anyone more deserving passed over in any promotion decision. There are VERY talented females and minorities working here, but I haven't seen anyone slighted yet. Just an update a few years later.
