I agree with the guy below. Outstanding eyepiece! Transmits a lot of light and is sharp to the edge of its rather large (for a planetary eyepiece) 50 degree field.

Clave Plossl 16mm
[webmaster note: vote moved from duplicate entry]

I was observing M-4 using my 16" newtonian in 1991 with my workhorse 12 & 16 mm Konigs when I decided to see how my Clave 12 & 16mm planetary eyepieces purchased in 1977 from Cross Optics would perform on a deep sky object. The upshot is that I now have one type of eyepiece for planetary and deep sky..the 8,10,12 and 16mm Claves bought for 70.00 a piece are now my workhorses for everything. The Clave revealed more stars, a brighter image, more detail and darker background. The difference was nothing short of dramatic! Just because a Clave or another narrow field of view eyepiece gets clumped together with other eyepieces as a planetary eyepiece only doesn't necessarily mean that's all their good for as I learned. I'd owned the Claves for 14 years and missed some great deep-sky views because I'd bought into classifying a great eyepiece into one observing category. My biggest regret is that I didn't buy something below 6mm and a lot more above 16mm from Clave\Cross.

Clave Plossl 16mm
This is an outstanding normal field of view eyepiece. Pinpoint star images all the way across the field of view. Substantially larger field of view than a 16mm Brandon with more light thruput. I don't think there is a 16mm eyepiece available with more light thruput. It is also substantially better corrected than a 16mm Brandon at the edge of the field of view. Compares favorably with 16mm Brandon at the center of the field of view with a very slight advantage to the Brandon. Outstanding contrast similar to 16mm Brandon. Relatively large field of view coupled with outstanding optical correction and light thruput make this eyepiece equally suitable for both planetary and deep sky observing. I like the way the aluminum eyecup blocks stray outdoor light but it also makes this eyepiece unsuitable for use with eyeglasses. Your eye goes right up to the aluminum with the eye lens recessed inside the aluminum eyecup all of which makes this eyepiece very durable. This is an good but unpretentious looking, very well constructed, no nonsense, top of the line eyepiece IMO. If you can find one of these used for $100 pick it up immediately. You can unload it for about twice that if its in good condition. I paid $240 for one new. I don't think there are many, if any, out there new anymore unless Clave' went back into production.

Clave Plossl 16mm
This is a great workhorse eyepiece. Good sharpness across the field of view, good contrast and color correction. The extended barrel precisely locates the observer's eye so there is no hunting for the "sweet spot". The ocular does not call attention to itself optically (just like my 30mm), which is what a performance eyepiece is all about. An impromptu comparison to a TeleVue plossl showed that my 16mm Clave more than held its own. The only drawback is the lack of filter threads, otherwise, I would give it a "10".

It's a Clavé !!!!!
Is there a default ? Perhaps the eye relief which is short but the image is
so sharp !
