Celestron Powerstar PEC 8
I have had this scope since 1991, and I was very happy with it. But one day I saw through a 8" LX200 and saw what is stability. The optics are identical, I can see the same features in Jupiter, Saturn or deep sky objects with both, but when the wind strikes the instrument LX200 remains almost vibration free, while powerstar 8 pec is FRUSTRATING!!! I will change the optical tube to a Losmandy G11.

In some ways this scope falls between two stools. It was a bit more expensive than the basic C8, but had PEC with four drive rates. On the other hand to exploit this imaging potential you'd probably want the more stable Ultima 8. Even so this is a scope offering plenty of fun, especially when collimated well. Drive is good, as well as build quality, apart from the usual dreadful Celestron finder. From my urban backyard (mag 4.5 on a good night) I'm half way thru the Herschel 400 list and enjoyed some nice views of Jupiter (blue festoons) and Saturn (seven moons). It's a scope with few vices - other than those associated with any mass produced SCT - and will go plenty of places you still haven't thought of taking it. Much more enjoyable than my 4" Vixen achro.
