I've had the 8i SE for over a year now, and it just keeps pleasing me all over again the more I use it. It combines a decent aperture with light weight, accurate go-to, and easy portability. Set up is quick and painless. Once you've gotten familiar with the Sky-Align program, it only takes a couple of minutes to begin stargazing. The controller display provides interesting info on whatever object you're observing. The optics are better than I expected from a Schmidt-Cassegrain, as I've been a little spoiled by a 4" APO refractor. This scope provides very pleasing views of most Messier objects and the brighter NGCs as well. Years ago, I used a 10" Schmidt-Cassegrain that was a wonderful deep-sky instrument, but at 120 lbs (quite a bit more when carrying cases are taken into consideration), it was a backbreaker to load, unload and set up. The 8i SE is a featherweight in comparison, yet offers only slightly less performance.

One cautionary note: the light weight means that this scope is sensitive to jostling, so you have to exercise a lot of diligence around kids. They tend to bump into things in the dark. And any bump means you have to realign it.

Overall, an excellent value.
