Celestron Comet Catcher
On my Meade LXD55 goto mount this is a fabulous portable setup. After owning several larger, heavier scopes I am now down to the orange tube Comet Catcher and my Parks Jovian 4" SCT. I am considering a mounting scheme to use them simultaneously. Should be a great combo. But yes, if you are considering one and will get a Cheshire eyepiece to collimate, you will love this fine scope. I would pass on the later black tube versions as they are a crap shoot.

Had this orange bomb for nearly 20 years. It's been backpacking in the Rockies and many a car camping trip. Only problem is the focuser is wearning out. Very sharp image when used with the original 18 mm eyepiece. Pushed it to the limits with a 4 mm and 2x barlow. If you see a used one...buy it.

My second scope and one of my favourites. From Celestrons' orange peel era (paint scheme), which is supposed to have been their peak. Very portable, well made and decent optics. I had it mounted on a Edmund Scientific Equatorial mount. The two made a great combination. Could also be used on a camera tripod but tube wasn't that well balanced. Just wish I hadn't sold it. Replaced it now with a Celestron 80WA, which is great a grab & go scope but not as good as this little scope was. Hindsight is a great thing. Would now make a good secondhand buy.

This is the best beginner scope on the marker very fast F:3.6 wide field 500mm
Brighness is awe-some In colorado I needed sunglasses while viewing the moon
The moons on jupiter are very clear.

I have an original comet catcher from the mid 80s...about $250 then... and over the years have found it to be an exceptional little RFT. With high grade eyepieces it gives pinpoint star points almost to the very edge of the field. The only option I have ever added is to put an LED star pointer on it, as it came minus any kind of pointing device. The sealed tube has kept the mirrors like new. I have owned a Meade 2080...bought prior to the Comet Catcher...it was a fine scope, but when I got strapped for cash I sold it...I put the Celestron away,determined to keep it....to this day I'm glad I hung on to it....I highly recommend it for portability, optics and plain fun to use....I seldom use more than about a 10mm eyepiece with it...preferring to stay with a 24 or 25mm for the wide view. Very portable. Was my first scope in 1986. Observed all the Messier objects with it. Mounted on a tripod with slow motion controls. Takes great phots when mounted on top of my SCT.

Celestron Comet Catcher
I received a celestron comet catcher as an optical tube assembly with a quarter-20 photographic tripod receptacle block halfway along the tube. This placement is very out of balance and generally not worth trying to use. Since I have not had a sufficient mount I won't give my impressions of the optics.
I am currently in the process of building a small dob mount out of tubing, lumber, felt and a lazy susan (Total cost at HomeDepot $32) that I hope will transform this short tubed scope into the easy set-up, highly portable scope that I will use ten times more often than my bigger scopes.
