Celestron 9.5x44 ED
Pros:
Exceptional color rendition.
Exceptionally sharp on Axis.
Light, comfortable and balanced--feel good in the hand.
Tripod socket.
Almost perfect combination of power versus aperture for moderate light-pollution areas.
Unlike many 10x50s, also make great birding binoculars (close focus 14')

Cons:
View is soft towards edges.
Like all Celestron frames, they seem more delicate than Swift, Fujinon, for example.
Additional cost for ED glass seems a little excessive. But it's coming down.
No longer imported by Celestron, but Eagle Optics still stocks them (about $280).

Celestron 9.5x44 ED
Just picked a new one up off ebay from a dealer clearing old inventory (also got the 10x42 Ultima...both for $175!) Have been reading the praises of the ED binos for a while now, so had to see what all the hoopla was about. On my occasional visits to Astronomics, I'd looked briefly thru a Swift 8x44ED Ultralite (made by the same Japanese optical mfr, Hiyoshi Kogaku-JB56) and physically a clone of the Celestron, save for the eyepieces and body covering. There was also an 8x42 Ultralite on the shelf and after a look thru the ED, took a peek thru that one....couldn't tell a nickle's worth of difference looking down the street at a really gaudy billboard about 500m distant (would hv been a better test had there been a half moon, or at least a bluebird or painted bunting handy, but....oh well)
So it is with the Celestron...between the 10x and 9.5x I discerned no noticable advantage in color purity, saturation or "snappiness of image" with the ED. What I did see, however, is a definite edge to the 10x42 in resolution and edge sharpness, with brightness being a tossup. My test for resolution is to read car tags in a parking lot from my second floor patio (closest row is a measured 228m from my railing mount, using a Bushnell Yardage Pro 1000....farthest row is around 315m, depending on if the tag is on a Suzuki or a Suburban). The ED just wouldn't quite come to clear focus (especially the left side....may be an eyepiece defect here) to read the tags on the first row of vehicles. The 10x showed even details on the tags....my 8.5x44 Audubon easliy showed the numbers. So the 9.5 isn't quite the stellar performer I'd hoped for....also considering that about a full third of the field is decidedly soft, it's hard to give the rating level that some other users have. But will probably keep it, at least for a while....

Celestron 9.5x44 ED
Incredible on-axis sharpness. The contrast and color correction, I assume, are from the use of ED glass and make this pair very enjoyable to view through. I use this pair for day and night use and am more than happy with the results. On first use, I was very impressed with the brightness of this binocular. It also has a great handhold feel, very light, and the perfect pair to comfortably carry around for an extended outing. I've used binoculars from Leicas to Fujinons and this particular pair, available from Eagle Optics, has pleased me the most. I'm glad Eagle Optics chose to carry this excellent binocular when Celestron dropped it from their line.

Celestron 9.5x44 ED
For the price excellent quality images with good correction until very close to the edge. Excellent colour correction and fairly light given the objective diameter. Available now only through Eagle Optics in the US as discontinued by Celestron

Celestron 9.5x44 ED
Long eye-relief, sharp, bright. Better night sky views than any 10x50 I've used extensively.

Celestron 9.5x44 ED
Very sharp on axis, colors bright, "snap-to" focus. Construction seems a bit less rugged than some. Very comfortable eye relief. Better all around than any light weight 10x50 I've ever used. Excellent hand-held astro-glass, even better on a tripod.
