Here is a quote form Nightwatch An Equinox Guide to Viewing the Universe: "The best binoculars I have seen for under $400 are the Adlerblick series by Carton Optics of Japan. In both the 7x50 and the 10x50 sizes, they are exceptionally lightweight and produce very sharp images." Rubber coat, strap & case included

These are my third pair of Carton Adlerblicks (new style) with black rubber skins. Let me say that if limited to one pair of binoculars that would have to be hand held only and for all uses, these would be it. I have 16 pair of binoculars including the 3 binoculars in the Fujinon FMT-SX series.

Why? A 5.25mm exit pupil is very well matched to my 49 year old eyes. I also find that the 6.5 degree field is also very nice. Couple that with the nice ergonomics and the extremely light weight of these binoculars and you have a great combination. It is more than adequate in terms of light gathering ability in the day time and also quite nice at night. Very good combination of magnification and exit pupil. The depth of field is also very nice, an important consideration for daytime use.

While not as sharp to the edge as their 7x50 brothers, they do have a wider field of view and a darker background when viewing the night sky due to the smaller exit pupil. I have also had nice things to say about the Pentax 8x40 PCF V's. I really like those, but these Adlerblicks are better on the night sky.

I do have a love-hate relationship with the case. It is a nice black leather case in which the binoculars are put in upside down. The fit is very tight and you have to find the correct interpupiliary opening for the binoculars for them to go into the case at all. Once you get the hang of it you can do it, but not at first. Once in the case the binoculars are well protected, but insertion and removal is not a fast operation.

The only 42mm binoculars that I have seen that are better are the 10x42 Nikon Superior E's, and those cost about $700.00. I am limited to giving this binocular whole number ratings, so it's a 9, but I believe 9.5 more accurately describes my rating of these.

The only place they are available is Valley Microscope in Toronto. The number is 1 800 530-9425, or e-mail Tony at tony@valleymicroscope.com
