Description:Recommended by famous astronomer Terrence Dickenson. Here is a quote form Nightwatch An Equinox Guide to Viewing the Universe: "The best binoculars I have seen for under $400 are the Adlerblick series by Carton Optics of Japan. In both the 7x50 and the 10x50 sizes, they are exceptionally lightweight and produce very sharp images." Rubber coat, strap & case included

Carton Adlerblick 7x42
I was recently shipped a new pair of 7x42 Adlerblicks for evaluation. These binoculars are virtually identical to the 8x42 Adlerblicks that I own. The only external difference beside the appropriate labeling on the upper prism housing is the additional height to the rubber eyecups to account for the additional 4mm of eye relief that these have.

I originally special ordered my 8x42's because I wanted the additional magnification which I could have without giving away any true field. The smaller 5.25mm exit pupil is also more suited to me than the 6mm exit pupil of the 7x42's. I find that the smaller exit pupil enhances contrast when used for observing the night sky from a suburban location. Note to that with the same true field (6.5 degrees) the apparent field of an 8x binocular is 52 degrees vs. the 45.5 degrees in a 7x pair.

For daylight observing I found the 7x42 Adlerblicks to be nice. They have a nice large depth of field. A chimney at about 100 to 150 yards was well defined and when detail is slowly brought to the edge of the field it remained fairly sharp with little distortion. This is about the same as the 8x42 pair, but not nearly as good as the 7x50 Adlerblicks which were excellent. On the night sky the image quality was virtually the same as the 8x42's but the darker background of the 8x42's coupled with their wider apparent field really give them the edge for astronomical viewing. On axis stars remain relatively sharp and pinpoint about 75% of the way from field center to edge. When looking off-axis (peering diagonally across the field and concentrating on the edge) the stars are good only 50% of the way from field center. Stars at the edge could be improved somewhat by refocusing. This however degrades images at field center. It also tends to indicate that the field is not entirely flat. I had a pair of Celestron 7x42 Ultimas. While I did not like the soft leatherette covering that those had, the star images were virtually points up to the field edge.

For the reasons cited above, I really prefer the 8x42 Adlerblicks, I am quite happy with them. These binoculars, while good, somewhat disappointed me. I felt that the eyepiece design would be very much like, if not the same as the 7x50 Adlerblicks. I felt they would be a smaller version of them with a slightly wider field. Unfortunately the image quality is not in the same league as the outstanding 7x50's. I can strongly recommend the 7x50's and the 8x42's, my recommendation of the 7x42's is more lukewarm.
