Canon 10x30 IS
It is possibly the best mid-price binoc, but still has large room of improvement. The IS works but is it really necessary? The binoc is light in weight and 10x is not too high indeed.

The most impressive feature is the eyepiece. Very very nice. The coating is very attractive, just like other high ended binoc. The field stop is excellent, very clear and the edge performance is very good. The eye relief is excellent for eyeglass wearers. Why doesn't canon make eyepieces?

However, I do find the following drawbacks on this pair:
1. Not waterproof.
2. The body seems flimsy.
3. The rubber eyecup is outdated. It should be replaced by twist up/down type.
4. The depth of field is too swallow.

Compared to Leica 12x50 BN, Leica is brighter, sharper and clearer. And the view is more 3D likes. It can beat the Canon undoubtedly.

However, Canon is good after all. It should have a special place in everyone arsenal. Highly recommened.

So wait. You're telling me that a 50mm diameter objective binocular can outperform a 30mm? How can that be? It's not like the 50's have 20mm more objective or something...Oh wait! They do.

Canon 10x30 IS
Well, I've only had them for a few days, so take my comments with a grain of salt. Moreover, I'm no bino expert by any means.

Anyway. I traded in my Pentax 8x42 DCF WP's for the Canon 10x30 IS mainly for the IS feature as well as the weight savings.

Pros:
The Canon has IS - it isn't perfect, but it works.
The Canon 10x30 are light weight - easy and comfortable to hold above your head (looking up) for astronomy.

Cons:
The Pentax's are brighter (duh!) and I think sharper.
The Pentax's are water proof.
The Pentax's are better constructed heavy & solid.
The exit pupil is bigger and better on the Pentax's.

Bottom line: I like the Canon's better.

The Canon's are not as solid as the Pentax's but I wanted the weight savings, so that figures. The 3mm exit pupil on the Canon is too small - I notice some blackout if I don't position my eyes carefully. Eye relief is good, however. The IS feature is better than nothing, but not nearly as effective as I thought it might be. The IS won't do you any good if you are spastic.

The Canon 10x30 IS are not perfect, but for the money and features, they get my thumbs up. I know 30mm aperture isn't considered adequate for astronomy, but once I locate the area of my target using my Canon binos, I point my 12" newtonian telescope with binoviewer to diesect the details. The combo works for me.

I would never use the larger Canon IS models unless they can get the weight down. To me, given their optical limitations, binos have got to be convenient, light and comfortable, or forget them.

Canon 10x30 IS
I don't know enough about binoculars to really vote. I am located on a lake and can easily read signs slightly over one quarter mile away when the IS is "on" but due to shake can not otherwise read the signs. I would suspect the letters are about 1 inch high. On items like the moon the details are great. You can see a shuttle pretty easily [ "can't see the windows though" ]. Battery life seems pretty good as I don't change them. AA. more than about once in nine months and I'm sure the unit gets a good 5 to 10 minutes a day watching wildlife on the lake. You can get some really neat views of flying birds just as long as you activate the IS as you pick up the binoculars. They are easy on the eyes, with or without glasses and are really the first pair I have been happy to use as compared to some good military 7x35 or 7x50 which I never could get used to.

Canon 10x30 IS
My earlier comments got erased, so here is a quick summary of my experience. I own about fourty pairs of binocs, and these get used the most with the possbile exception of the Canon 15x45IS and Optolyth 15x63 Royals, when I'm stargazing, and the Docter 8x22 aspherics, when I really need a compact light-weight package for backpacking etc.. These are definitely the Canon binoc to buy if you want something great for all around usage. They are slighly sharper than the 15x45ISs, and provide a nice, sharp and bright image -- surprisingly bright for a 3mm exit pupil glass. They are also much more reasonably priced than even the 12x36IS, which are also not as sharp, since they, like the 15x45ISs are a roofprism design. The only reason I give these a 9 instead of a 10 is that they are still a bit on the bulky and heavy side for a 10x30. They still need to figure out a way to make the stabilization system so light that they are only a few ounces heavier than unstabilized binocs. But clearly I'm being a rather tough grader demanding that so soon!

Sir,
I am going to purchase either the 10X30IS or the 12X36IS Canon binocluars. Trying to undersatnd if it is worth the added investment to go with the 12X30IS at 30% more light gathering capability over that of the 10X30IS. Your comments on Roof Prisms ( a negative) used in the 12X36IS leads me to think that the light gathering 30% gain is almost canceled out by the roof prisms and is not worth buying them. I do not know what the adavantage is in going to 12X36IS for such a small gain in light gathering and an added $200.00 expense. Appreciate you comments.

Canon 10x30 IS
Canon's innovative idea is just amazing. When I first hold it in hands and adjust the novel design eyepieces width, I say to myself, it is the buy of the year. Killer optics, the view is crystal clear. While viewing the light sources such as wall lamp, I canoot detect any internal flare through the lens. That obviously blew away two of my 7X & 8x Pentax roofs in this aspect. The image is sharp to the edge. It is definitely the merit of its field flatten lens.
The contrast is also excellent. Birds feathers are easily distinguished from the foliage. Any objects you view can stand out from the background as you were really 10 times closer. It is good at observing planetary objects. Just manage to see the red spot of Jupiter and the ring of Saturn. Of course it is not bright enough for the deep sky. The color rendition equals to my Leica APO scope. It weighs 650g with batt, excellent balance in hands. I just feel comfortable to view through it. I would bring it along for outing. I absolutely agree with the previous comment in the web that if only 1 bino for me, that is the one. I wonder why people buy unstabilised but expensive Leica or Zeiss. Confidently, FULLMARK, because I cannot find any deficiencies.

Amazing. The stabilization allows you to split Albireo and Delta Cephei. Optics are nice even without the stabilization. For $250 (with the rebate) they're a bargain.

Canon 10x30 IS
I have used the Canon 10 x 30 IS binoculars for just over a year. I have to say that they are a superb package for the cost. Not only do they perform like 50mm binoculars but without the weight, but they also deliver a fine wide-angle view. I own a pair of generic 7 x 50 glasses and these easily outperform them.

With these glasses I have observed all the planets out to Neptune and many Messier objects. For me, they are at their best when used sweeping the Milky Way. Cygnus is magnificent; and I have been able to split Albireo.

Optical quality is excellent with views clear right to the edge of field. And considering they have an exit pupil of 3mm, the view is bright - just as bright in my view as 7 x 50s or a pair of wartime (uncoated) 10 x 80s.

Comfort: deep rubber eyecups mean you can support the weight of these binoculars on your eyebrows with no discomfort.

The only weakness is that the IS mechanism is not perfect. There is still some shake if you try to use them unsupported. With some support to the elbows (eg a garden wall, or laying in a sun lounger) they hold rock-steady.

In short, they are well worth the £279 I paid for them in August 2000. They are definitely keepers.

Canon 10x30 IS
They are the only Canon IS Binoculars that iare light enough for extended use,
the bigger ones are all too heavy for much non-tripod use - but then why have
stabilised binos?
Also I prefer the analogue stabilisation in the 10x30s to the digital one in
the larger models (I spent a long time testing all their models before deciding
this, don't ask me why - it just feels better).
The star views are excellent, the stabilisation enables you to see deeper than
you should be able to for the apature (the light is less spread out so stars
are dots not slightly blurred dots), I'd choose them over my 7x50s every time.
People just look through them, press the button and say "wow".

Canon 10x30 IS
I really love these Canon binoculars. I sold my older 10x50's immediately after I got the Canons and now use these exclusively. They are great in every way. Light weight. Very comfortable and ergonomic to use. The optics are super sharp with very impressive light grasp for this size binocular -- must be the coatings -- and remarkable clear to the edge of the field. Most of all, the stabilization technology puts these in an entirely different class from unstablized binoculars due to the steadiness and resolution improvement. I enjoy using them much more than any other binoculars. In some ways, they are even better than a telescope. Could be the best $330 (after rebate) I ever spent.

Canon 10x30 IS
Views are clear to the edge. Dimmer than my 8x42s but what do you expect. The resolution gain from image stabilization more than compensates for this deficiency in any case. I prefer this one to the 12x36 hands down. The 15x45 is in a different category, but I still prefer the 10x30 for general use. If you can only have one pair if binoculars, this is the one I'd recommend.
