Description:This scope may sound a cheapo to you but no. This one comes back

from the early 80's. The optics are so sharp, that even in

bad condition (there's some dry alcohol in the objective),

Saturn's rings are tack-sharp even at relatively low magnification.

(70x). Under those conditions and relatively good weather I could

see nebulosity in M42. I live in Athens,Greece, where light pollution

won't let you see the stars of the small dipper!

I recently bought this at a garage sale, and I don't know if it's just missing parts or what, but It can't put the tripod together! Can someone help?

My first scope, received it when i was about 10 and now i'm 32 and changing it soon to give it to my oldest son who turns 8 next month. This scope served me really well for solar system stuff like planets (Even the Sun and Mercury through Saturn) and to teach basic amateur astronomy to friends who were always excited when i brought it in camping.

Never had to complain about this little beauty, if you have one and need a change, give it to a child and teach him basic stuff !

Only negative point, the ''wooden'' mount !

My first scope. It clearly shows two cloudbands on Jupiter, one ring around Saturn, sunspots (with a dangerous eyepiece filter...)and lots of craters on the moon.

If you don't think that's worth $90, you're crazy.

I should have kept mine around for a paper weight. But doesn't it change the color of the paper?

Well, I would have to be called crazy then too I guess. The 'scope the way it comes out of the box is almost unuseable. Thank God it was not my first 'scope just something I picked up at a garage sale. It's not about whether it's worth
the asking price or not. By your commment, I'm sure that you believe the $59.95
50mm Tasco is a "best buy". This is my second comment in this thread, and it will be my last. I won't put a mumber on this 'scope, but I will say that it and it's brethern have directed 100's, possibly 1000's, of people away from astronomy, believeing that all telescopes are shakey, difficult to use things that are just not their cup of tea. I wonder how many more folks we would have in our ranks of their first 'scope had been a good six inch dob instead of one of these pieces of crap?

I keep mine around as a paper weight. But seriously, if you put this with a real mount and tripod, and upgrade to a 1.25 inch diagonal, it's almost useable.

I find it useful to show the kids in my astronomy club what sorts of things to stay clear of. Can make a decent guide scope with the right optical improvments. (of course if your going to spend that kind of money on it, you might as well buy a real 'scope to begin with)
