For years I was in denial. The 400GTO was just too @#$% expensive, I did't need bells & whistles, too hard to find, the decade-long wait list..., etc. I had all the excuses burned into my skull. I played around with a few small equatorials and managed to lose bucks on every resale. If I hadn't owned a 600E GTO for several years, I may have avoided the inevitable conclusion -- nothing quite measures up to a GTO. I decided to stop mount hopping and go directly to the long-term solution. The quest took several months, but that time is now a fond memory. I've found my 400GTO, and it's as good as advertised. The look of uncompromising machine and finish work, the sound of precision servos, the touch of well-placed controls, the elegant softare....{sigh}. It's a shame there aren't more of these mounts to go around...

Astro-Physics 400GTO

1996 400QMD: QMDs were replaced by the GTOs several years ago. Unfortunately, there aren't enough GTOs to meet the demand (big surprise there!). A QMD is the same precision mount minus servos, a computer, and the big price tag. I have a NGC-MAX with AP encoders and the QMD gets me around the sky quite well. The mount carries my 130EDFS for visual work and needs to be well-balanced. The level of engineering is timeless and there's a lot of life left in this mount.
