While not the best Anime, this Anime does stick as close as it possibly can to the manga. F-Bombs dropped everywhere in this Anime which also lost its flair in the process. Not highly recommended.

Skip the movie and read the manga. There is no comparison. The original manga is better in every way and would receive at least 8 all the way across.

As an avid anime and manga collector I must say Shirow's work is among the best, my opinion. And the Appleseed movie was fairly good in my opinion. The animation was top notch (for that time). I do think that they attempted to compress a lot of the manga's storyline into one 69 minute movie, but still it came out very well and I throughly enjoyed it.

I was sorely dissapointed by the anime version of Appleseed. The manga is so well drawn though, that it would be difficult to produce an animated version that could do it justice. But animation problems aside, the anime didn't have the "Feel" that the manga brings across, and thats the important part, which the animators of Appleseed sadly missed. While some of the scenes are animated fluidly, the colors are drab, the story drags and the music is utterly uninspiring. The only really cool part was with the villian (AJ Sabastian)when he changes out his cyberware. The Landmates (when they showed up) were well done, especially the GUGES, but Landmates aren't what appleseed is about. Rent patlabor instead and read the Manga version. If you are a fan of the Manga of appleseed, STAY AWAY as you are likely to be offended.

Two words sum up Appleseed in my opinion:
Not Bad.

Think about it; that really does say something. Alot of the anima out there is really lousy, so a "not bad" does say something for the quality. Alot of the people here compare it to the manga, which is rarely ever a fair comparison for any anima. I like to think of Appleseed as a sort of primer. It is good to bring someone who has only seen "mainstream" cartoons into anima, without getting them into truly gross anima (Fist of the North Star) or anima with long, contorted plot lines (Ghost in the Shell, Akira). Appleseed, like Black Magic, have fair story lines, good art, and some action. For true story buffs, Wings of Honneamise or Vampire Hunter D are better. For action buffs, Akira, Ghost in the Shell, or my favorite AD Police are better picks. Give it a break folks; not every thing can be high art.
