Apogee Zoom 7.4mm-22mm
Awesome eyepiece for the PST. Only the CEMAX and my cheap 25mm celestron kellner eyepiece matches up with this eyepiece for the PST. However, on the moon has horrible lateral color. This will show up in larger apertures I think. Not recommended for a bright moon. I suspect the success of the eyepiece towards the h-alph pst is because of light throughput. The lens design seems to be simple. On venus has horrible lateral color has well. Don't know about other planets though. I does seem sharp in the center though if you don't mind the off axis performance.

I did a detailed comparison of this against the Vixen LV Zoom. The Apogee loses out to the Vixen at low power (dimmer images, lateral false color on the moon, and narrower FOV). However, it is better than the Vixen at high power (sharper, brighter and wider FOV, although it still has lateral yellow color on the moon). Also, this eyepiece is smaller and lighter than the Vixen, and I find its eyeguard more comfortable. You can get two of these for less than one Vixen, and they are just great in a binoviewer.

Excellent eyepiece for planet work. I was suprised at the sharpness at high powers for such a cheap price!

Highly recommended (for planet work).

Apogee Zoom 7.4mm-22mm
Quite a bit of false color, but the images are relatvely sharp. A good deal for the price, but it doesn't hold a candle to the Vixen 8-24 mm (which costs 3-4x as much).

I have a pair that I use in my bino viewer, decent performance at a decent price and I like the flexibility of the zoom. Construction isn't the greatest - one has a sticky spot midway when vertical, goes away when horizontal, like a metal shaving in there somewhere. The other is works fine. Matching the power between the two isn't too difficult, just turn one or the other until the images merge.

Great zoom eyepiece for the price!! Views are sharp. I wish it had a wider FOV! Narrow FOV is the bane of zoom eyepieces.

Great for the price. I have two cheap scopes which I keep in my car and both are fitted with this ep.

The price of this zoom eyepiece is now US$49.95. I didn't like it much in my C8 when I first got it, as the high power views didn't seem all that crisp and bright, and the low power views had too narrow a field of fiew. I thought it was going to be another dud purchase which I would rarely, if ever, use again. But I've been a lot more pleased with it in my 4inch Vixen APO refractor. The Airy discs and their pin point stars show up quite well across the field at high power. The low power field of view is obviously still narrow, but it shows a lot of sky due to the Vixen's shorter focal length - so that it doesn't seem as annoying as it did in the C8. I now find the zoom eyepiece more used, and much more fun to use than some of my other more expensive dud eyepiece purchases.

Further to my comments above about this eyepiece being good in my Vixen, I've found another use for it. I've now got two of these, which I use in my Takahashi Twin View. Thus, a pair of these zoom eyepieces nicely solves the problem of getting matching eyepiece pairs for a binocular viewer. I had thought there may be some trouble getting the variable magnifications to match. But there was none. The correct magnifications just snap into focus.
