Antares Speers-Waler 7mm
Recently came across an older Speers-Waler marked 7.4mm. Test at store of purchase were very impressive with the ep having a very sharp high contrast wide field including a daytime artificial star{diffraction image} and daytime images at high power. Could not detect any lateral color on test objects with the 7.4mm during daytime test.

Evening performance has been very impressive indeed in my ED100 and my 127 f/6.45 achromat. Stars are sharp to the edge in a beautiful wide field of view. Excellent contrast on starfields, deepsky objects,lunar/planetary/double stars. Mars and Saturn remain sharp right to the field stop with there shape staying true to the edge of field. Still can't detect much of any lateral color even at night on planets or bright stars towards the edge of field. No barrel or pincushion distortion and no astigmatism also noted towards the edge of field whatsoever in the f/6.45 refractor. This older Speers-Waler 7.4mm could give any of the more expensive high end well corrected widefield eps in a similar focal length a serious run for the money IMHO.

To sum it up simply excellent performance on and off axis with a huge beautiful field of view with this fine 7.4 mm Speers-Waler ep.

Antares Speers-Waler 7mm
I've owned or tried every Speers-Waler except the 5-8 zoom, which has plenty of reviews elsewhere...
The 7mm has the flattest field and the best edge performance of the line. The 12mm was a close second, but showed very slight field curvature at the extreme edge.

The 7mm is my favorite for viewing small planetary nebula at medium-high magnifications. The eyepiece has excellent contrast and brightness for such a huge stack of glass.

Star images are very tight, and lateral color is almost non-existant. (better than the 10mm SW, which does show a tiny bit of lateral color)

Build quality is very good, but not on par with Televue, Pentax, etc. Watch out for dust on the field lens...

NOTE: These comments are based upon my tests in a 12.5" F5.5 dob/newt. Different scopes and different focal ratios will likely yield different results.

Antares Speers-Waler 7mm
the extra in travel make this a consideration in some scopes when
compaired to the 7mm nagler it out preformed it, having a better field
field of view.i found the focus to be "very" critical and somewhat hard
to get excact, but it still delivered jaw dropping views.light throughput
was very nice,a good bang for the buc,i just wish they would make it to
go in 2" holders its an eighth inch too large.
