NOVAC is a great club. The ATM group is very good and the experience base of the club is excellent. If the rain ever stops this year, it should be another excellent year with good people.

As a new member, I asked lots of simple questions, and was steered in the right direction. Quickly learned techniques and purchasing tips that often take years on one's own. They have several dark sky viewing sites, a robo-scope coming online, a mentorship program, a well-populated scope loanership program, active in telescope making, Pro-Am research collaboration, and a well-stocked library to boot.

Northern Virginia Astronomy Club
Club has a full range of members ranging from novices to professional astronomers (Naval Observatory and Smithsonian Air and Space Museum staffers). I had heard it has more members credited with discovering asteroids than any other club. Has over a half-dozen official observings sites, hosts "the year round star party" to facilitate access to one of the darkest observing sites in the eastern US (Spruce Knob, WV), and has "Sweet Sixteen", a folded path reflector built by the members and used for public viewings. The nominal membership numbers are a bit misleading-- the active membership is about 1/10 of the 600+ on the books, so you get to know your fellow "hard core" observers just as in a smaller club. NOVAC is in the process of building a robotic/remote controlled observatory and a 36" club scope.

Very active, growing in leaps and bounds (over 600 now), very involved with educating new members, continuing a successful telescope loaner program, providing viewing opportunities to the public throughout the year, finalizing a robotic imaging scope at its own observatory, and very active in all aspects of telescope making.

Northern Virginia Astronomy Club
Great club! Has several observing sites around the Washington DC area including Spruce Knob, WV (best on the east coast). Club has many loaner scopes, binos, and a hydrogen-alpha filter. Other projects include a 36" mirror, robo-scope, mentor program and monthly observing sessions. A+++
