Mizar and Alcor
I enjoy showing this to kids this way... First I have them just look at the pair and ask them how good their eyes are. It makes a good eyetest. Then, I hand them the binoculars and they can clearly see the pair. Then I tell them that there is still more to see. I point the telescope at it and they can see that Mizar itself is a double. They get a thrill out of it.

i remember as a kid being taught that mizar and alcor formed a "visual" double star system. it wasn't until recently that i learned that they aren't a true double, it's just an illusion as seen from our perspective. but, a couple months ago i decided to swing my telescope, an 8" dob, towards the pair just to take a look. i didn't know that mizar is actually a true double! i was floored! alcor looked so far away from mizar in the field-of-view, but mizar is actually a tight pair of beautiful blue stars. incredible! i know this sounds wierd, but now i usually make it a point to look at them whenever i have my scope set up. amazing!
