They are my favorites. They appear so wispy and delicate. Yet, they are these large galaxies so far away.

M82 wins it by a mile. M81 compliments the sight, and is no bad sight on it's own.

Everytime out, I just keep going back to M82.
It is at it's best in my 10" LX200 with Radian 18mm eyepiece at about 138x. I have never seen so much interesting detail in any astronomical object, other than the planets or moon.

Wow!

Old favourite. If you are new to deepsky observing try hunting these two galaxies out. They are easy to find and fit in the same field of a low power eyepiece. They will give you an idea of how galaxies appear through the telescope but be warned most galaxies are very much fainter than these two! happy hunting.

I was absolutely amazed the first time I got M81/M82 into the same field of view with my 8" SCT. I still like going back and viewing these two very different galaxies every time I go out Stargazing, It always gives me the same thrill as the first time I ever saw them!
