Orion Nebula
I am a new observer and happend across this with my 10x50's from my backyard in England. Although it just looked like a small smudge I found it facinating that i could see something that far away. I can't wait until xmas when santa brings me a scope, this will be the first oject I point it at.

Orion Nebula
Far and away the best deep-sky object for Northern hemisphere observers. A correction: Look to the sword just south of the belt stars, rather than the belt itself, for the nebula. Binoculars will show the nebula as a bright diffuse area with tiny stars embedded (the middle "star" in the sword). Increasing scope aperture reveals more and more detail, as well as actual color (green to pale pink). The views in even moderate sized scopes will knock your socks off. Not to be missed.
