Most newcomers will be much more impressed if you explain this object to them before you show it to them. Even relatively large amateur scopes show just a smudge of light. It is imagination which turns that smudge of light into a fascinating object to observe. Just imagine if you were to set out for the Andromeda Galaxy at a speed of 100mph along a celestial highway. After having driven for 13.7billion years(the estimated age of the universe!), you would have only made it 1/1000 of the way there, and the galaxy would appear no closer or larger than it did when you started your journey! Now who wouldnt be impressed by that?!

Not nearly as visually impressive as the moon, Jupiter, or Orion, but it is my favuorite object because that faint smudge is the combined light of two hundred billion suns, and that ghostly glow has been travelling two million years to get here.

Yes, it's just a fuzzy blob in almost any scope visually, and a far cry from the stunning images seen in photograps.

My daughters dissapointed cry: "is that all, father" is rather typical statement for all those "lost souls" out there, who can't apreciated fuzzy blobs like "we" can.
Right?

"MOM!" I called after I showed my family Jupiter, and pointed the scope straight up, "YOUR EYELASHES OILED MY EYEPIECE AND I CAN'T CLEAN IT!" A fuzzy blob was in the eyepiece.

Although the Andromeda Galaxy is just a oily blob in my 80mm refractor, I love viewing it since it was my first DSO. I also love slacking for an hour while I take CCD images of it :). CCD imaging is great in short-focus refractors!
