Description: | The Cincinnati Observatory Center is the oldest observatory in the
United States, and is on the National Historic Register. We boast a
12-inch Alvan Clark refractor and a 16-inch Merz und Mahler refractor.
The Center is rich with astronomical and U.S. history. In 1843
President John Quincy Adams traveled by stagecoach from Washington D.C.
to dedicate the original observatory. At the time of its installation in
1845, the Alvan Clark instrument was the largest refractor in the world.
The original mahogany tube and fittings have been completely and
accurately restored. The 16-inch scope travels on its original
mechanical clock drive. The buildings housing the scopes are supreme
examples of Hannaford architecture. The Center is truly the birthplace
of American Astronomy.
