University Optics Konig II 24mm

I have had this EP for about 2 years now. It has replaced my 15mm Panoptic as favourite EP in my f/4.5 Starfinder. It is also my most-used EP with my 17.5 f/5 dob.
Being a newbie, i can not give a quantitative evaluation, but I can say that this has been a highly enjoyable, low hassle eyepiece. Its strong points are
1) sharp and bright views
2) it is not fussy about eye-position - very important when i am on a ladder
3) light weight - i do not have balance problems
4) budget price - if i ever drop it on the concrete (highly likely) i can replace it without a 2nd mortgage
Negatives
1) the outer periphery shows some distinct seagulls in the f/4.5, although they are not nearly as noticeable in the f/5
2) no eyecup
3) it doesnt look cool like the Meades, Ultimas etc.

I was so happy with the 24mm that i have since bought a 12mm Koenig and a 2-inch 32mm. The 12mm looks like another winner.
Unfortunately, the 32 does not work as well as the 1.25 inch models, at least in my short f-ratio scopes.

I purchased this ep a few weeks ago and now have the 12mm,16mm and the new 24mm Koning. Very pleased with the way this ep works on beep sky and planetary detail, excellent contrast and no field curvature at all noticed on my F12 MCT but the Medae 24.5 did have some on the last 10%. Maybe I will try the 32 Koning but for now have the 30mm Ultima which does a good job but will be ordering the 40mm 2" Koning soon, its about $500 less than a 31mm Nagler with the same FOV. I would highly recomend these EP's over many out there and I have owned the others at 3 to 4 times the price but have not been as pleased as with the Koning's. There like orthos on steriods, recomended

I recently received the 24mm a few days ago, having read all the comments on this site and want to add my expirience as follows:

To make it short - if a good friend of mine would ask me, if I could recommend this EP I would definiteley say NO.

Here my arguments:

I intend to use it as a good wide view EP, it has the 60° FOV approximately primarily as deep sky objects EP for my 8" f/6 Dob as well as birding EP with my f/6.8 TeleVue Ranger.
Maybe you call me crazy, I also have the old 26mm Celestron which was the standard EP they packed into the C5 packages, and I also call a TeleVue 8-24 Zoom my own.
Those EP´s were the contenders in a comparison, and I hate the small FOW oft the TV-Zoom especially for birding, therefore the 24mm Koenig should be the "overview-replacement"

1.) fit and finish is nice, but outstyled
2.) the EP lacks of sharpness compared to the Celestron and the TV Zoom
3.) edge distortion - at appr. 70% of the FOV it tends to coma
4.) in comparison to the a.m. contenders it seems to have a lower light throughput

I also tried it in my f/10 TAL100 as well as in my TV85. Even in these scopes, especially
in f/10 the edge distortion was present, stars appear like small strokes at the most outer 10% of the field.

In the faster scopes, especially the TV85 and the Ranger for daylight use (birding) compared to the Zoom and the 26mm Ploessl, I always had the feeling, that I was unable to find the exact sharp focal point.

Conclusio:
I have Naglers (4.8, 7, 9 mm) which are perfect in terms of sharpness and distortion, the Koenig alls much behind, altough only 1/3rd the cost. It also falls behind the Ploessls in terms of sharpness. I believe, if you can get a good, used TV widefield for 50% up the price, this would be the better choice.
Altough, I´m not dissatisfied, I´ts worth the $ 99,-- and it ill find it´s place in the pouch of my Rangers carrying bag.

One heck of a pleasing eyepiece! Certainly helps owners of medium-sized scopes to appreciate what their scopes are really capable of.

I compared this eyepiece to a Meade 24.5 Superwide and I actually preferred the Konig due to it's noticeably better contrast. It was also a tiny bit sharper, although the true field of view was a bit less than the Meade. At F/14, this eyepiece is sharp to the edge. However, at F/4.5, the latter third of the field displays a large amount of curvature and astigmatism. On slow scopes, this eyepiece is fantastic, especially considering it’s price. On fast scopes, the eyepiece is still great on-axis, as long as you can live with the outer third curvature of field.

As noted above, this is a superb ep in a binoviewer. A winged eyeguard from Orion is a nice and inexpensive complement to this fine ep.

Excellent wide field EP, 60 degree FOV, contrast is superb, no ghosting, very good ER, the only reason I don't give it a 10 is no rubber eye guard. Its 98% of a meade 24.5 SWA and costs $80 less, recomended. This was done on a F6 5" scope and only a slight amount of distortion at the field edge, better than the meade swa's.

A very enjoyable eyepiece to use. Made in Japan. Nice wide field with good transmission and sharp most of the way to the edge. Very compact and affordable and quite well built. Barlows very well, which also makes it sharp to the edge. Only problem is occasional ghosting on planets when barlowed if the planet is off-axis, depending on eye position. That said, it is a nice and versatile low power eyepiece for small scopes with 1.25" focusers. Significantly better in all respects when compared to a plossl.

Beautiful views, comfortable eye relief, nice wide field, excellent contrast, bargain price. A real winner. Ninety percent as good as the 19mm Panoptic in a much lighter package at less than 1/2 the price.
