I bought this TV in late 1997, and it is great. It is in my opinion the best looking rear projection TV of it's kind by any company. even today in 2001 it's picture quality when using S-video, is on par with any non HDTV set. I wish it had a component video out but the S-video still lookes really good. This TV gets a 9 if it had a component I would give it a 10. Unless you have one of Sony's new HDTV sets then this is still arguably Sony's best looking standard TV.

I own the Sony 53"XBR and it is a perfect 10. High in every aspect, picture, sound, reliabilty etc. Friends were over watching Brave Heart and the scene with the horse charge was so real that it startled our visitors. Sony's succeed again!

I would have rated this TV a 10, but I only rate it an 8, because of the following reasons:

1. Difficult to calibrate
2. Line doubler (interpolator) cannot be defeated
3. Can't freely name the inputs

I had it professionally calibrated with Video Essentials, all the way down to luma and chroma delay. The fact that this was a parameter in service mode just blew me away, most other TVs don't have anything of the sort. I was so pleased at first.

But don't try to converge this set in service mode unless you do this for a living. The calibration controls, even tho there are about 20-30 of them, seem like a rather crude attempt at aligning them. There must be a far better way of doing this with some amount of user friendly ness and software control.

On the day I calibrated my TV, I waited for 3 hours before doing so, to let the tubes and mechanicals warm up and stretch out a bit.

Now post calibration, when you power on the set the picture quality is just fair. When it warms up tho, it starts to really show it's stuff. When it hits the 3 hour mark (at the point I calibrated the set), the picture quality is AMAZING. PERIOD. Beyond that, well, it's so damn good I challenge anyone to show me a RPTV Television that looks better for that screen size for under $5000 bucks.

I would, with some slight hesitation, buy another one. I just wish service mode calibration was alot easier. I hope the newer models are.

This set is capable of producing some of the most beautiful film-like images you're likely to see from a TV set. Only downside is lack of Component video inputs; however even with just S-video DVD and satellite look absolutely stunning with this set. Regular broadcast signals look great also with a good outdoor antenna. Video Essentials demonstartion video clip sequence also looks amazing on this set.

Ive had this tv for over a year. To put it simply it kicks ass. I looked at proscan, mitsubishi, Zenith/inteq. The Sony XBR exceeded all of them. Plenty of inputs and a very comprehensive menu. Only thing missing is component video inputs. The freeze frame feature is very useful. Has PIP, side by side picture, and main image with 8 channel scan around it. Also has 8 favorite channel display which gives a small clip from each channel in a repeating sequence. Has five preset viewing modes which can be customized. Has a sharper picture and better contrast than others in this price range. Not overly bright like many, good factory calibration. Has smooth screen shield built in to protect from scratches, it does reflect a little if room is to bright or in front of a window. Shield can be removed by factory technician though. Perfect centerpiece for large home theater. Build quality is also very sturdy and looks better than most other rear projection units, very slim also. Give it a 9 because 10 goes for the high quality front projection systems. component video is only thing missing, but the tv hasnt be revised since late 96 so that is acceptable. All other features make up for it.

Have had this XBR for 3 years; its picture is OUTSTANDING; its audio is excellent and its "freeze frame" is motionless and flawless, rivaling the best current 3D Y/C Comb Filters. It is quite worth the extra money and, the 'proof of the pudding' is that it will play over 1000 lines if the source delivered it. Even if it lacks any audio or video component connections, it will play all media better than anything else on the market will, with a mere sattelite or DVD connection. This TV is the absolute definition of "10".
