I own a pair of Thiel CS 1.5 speakers and, as a musician, have greatly appreciated their neutrality, resolution, and musicality (once paired with top-quality electronics). More recently, I tried a pair of MMG's "just for fun" (and because of the manufacturer's generous 60-day trial period). WOW...we never sent them back! Woodwinds in particular are even more natural on the MMG than on the Thiels; and vocals, piano, percussion are also extremely impressive. The top octave is slightly less refined than on the Thiels but the MMG's midrange is cleaner and it actually resolves noticeably more detail than the Thiels (who could have believed it?). The MMG is less picky about being matched with the right source and amplifier components, and sounds VERY musical. I've also come to appreciate its superbly realistic bass (though its extension is of course limited relative to larger panel speakers)...within its range, it sounds virtually identical to what we hear when we attend a local symphony performance. This speaker does actually need the full 60 days to burn in and sound its best, so be patient. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

After having listened to an open speaker like the Magnepan MMG you realize that this speaker sounds exactly as it should be, no colouring and lots of detail. The sensitivity is low, which might suggest you need a high-power amplifier. However, after changing my amp (Denon, 140 W/ch) for a Sugden A21A (only 25 W/ch, but true class A), now I know that quality of an amp is much more important that quantity. Especially the treble region and the sound stage sound much much better.
Because the Magnepans sound so good, a very good subwoofer (e.g. REL Stadium II, set at a crossover of 38 Hz in my listening room) is worthwhile considering.

This is an unbelivable speaker for its price and sound! The quality of this speaker is simply astonishing. It has wonderful inner detail, dynamics, soundstage and for me it gets LOUD and doesnt distort. The price is only the beginning of this speaker. I will never accept another "box" speaker again. From now on this is the only type of speaker i will seriously listen to.

The best entry-level high end component for $500! Superb resolution and detail. With proper placement (very important), results can be astonishing and you will never go back to a "box" speaker. Needs a LOT of power to restore dynamics properly...recommend at least 120W high current RMS. With good source equipment and a quality subwoofer (they are solid and clean only to 50-60Hz), the MMGs are the audio buy of the decade!

Along with a good subwoofer, like a Hsu Research, these are the best sounding speakers less than $2500. The most incredible bargain in all high-end audio.
