I purchased my AR9's late 1981. they were listed for $800 ea. but I got a steal on a 2 for 1 on close out. They have been great. I drive them with a M500 Carver amp and C1 pre-amp. The foam surrounds on the 12" woofers have deteriorated and I must have the surrounds replaced. Can't wait til I get them back.

Acoustic Research AR9
I got a pair of "Super Performance"-speakers from AR and some Status S40 (all towers). Overall the AR 9 I bought recenly, have a very high resolution and and wider angles of sound distribution than the Super Performance and the S 40's. I'm highly content with this speakers. Thay look nice and have Side-firing 25 cm passive-Subwoofers integrated.
Higher volumes do no harm and they sound very brillant.
Stereo and surround use: AR 9 (front left/right) and Super Performance (rear left/right) highly recommended.

I bought the original AR-9's in 1979....back when they weighted 130lbs each and had the 12" side-firing woofers. After all these years, every time I turn my system on, I shake my head in disbelief....how can a set of almost 25 year old speakers still sound so good??? When these puppies were new, they set me back $1500. Given their longevity and overall sound quality, it's probably been the best money I ever spent on a piece of home entertainment equipment

I drive my AR-9's with a Phase Linear 3000 Preamp and a Bose 1800 Power Amp.
