Phase Linear Adromeda-3
I purchased a set of Andromeda IIIs and Phase Linear 700 b amp and 4000 preamp for my Dance Studio the year they came out. I used them Mon- fri 4 to 5 hours per night until I blue a capacitor in one panel last year. I was and still miss the sound of my old system as does most of my students. I have had many people over the years listen to my system and most are amazed at the sound including a few real audio files.

I just discovered this site while trying to find a place to send my complete system to get it refurbished .

I own 1 set of Andromeda IIIs (2) 700B amps (1) 400 preAmp (1) 2000 preAmp and (1) 5000 tuner.

Phase Linear Adromeda-3
I purchased the Phase Linear Phase III (Andromeda III) system in Houston, TX in 1979 after listening to all the best of the day. If I remember correctly I wheeled and dealed and got about $150 off list. To this day, one of my best ever hi-fi purchases. I have had the speakers in four different home in living rooms from as small as 12x16 feet to as large as 20x30 feet. Here are a few thoughts. 1. It takes a lot a perseverannce to keep them. My wife wants them gone everytime we move. 2. They need power. I use a Carver M1.5t for nostalgia and am looking into something with a little more current. I have tried other amps and power/current and damping factor all add up to better sound. 3. They need room and sound better with a little deadening of the side walls to stop early side reflections. Given room they make a pretty good image. 4. I have never been able to get them to image precisely like speakers such as the Audio Physic Virgo III or Aerial Acoustics 7b speakers, but the have a smooth mid-range, airy highs, deep bass, and for jazz and guitar, I have never heard anything better. I like many others in the forum, look periodically to see if I can find a second pair to build a surround therater system, better than my current system in another room. I have only found two systems for sale during last three years, and they were not in good shape. Mine...eat your hearts out, are in great shape, no scratches, original drives, all due to some very serious coaching of movers. If you have to move, wra them in blankets after removing the feet. Discuss placement with the movers so the understand they can have nothing on them. Stand vertically and place where protected by other furniture. Alternate, box like mattress with lots of padding, and pray. Any way, if you have a pair, enjoy, if not, keep looking.

I just bought a pair of these for $50 Australian, they came with the subwoofer, but no motion control unit. CAn i run them anyway??? the circuit board looks a bit fucked, are they repairable?

Phase Linear Adromeda-3
I have owned this system since 1984. I purchased them from a second hand stereo store in Portland, OR for $500. I have listened to a lot of speaker systems and have never heard anything like these speakers. I used to run this system with 2 Philips 580 (205wpc) power amps. Once I ran the speakers hard enough that one of the coils in the xover melted the glue and came off of the circuit board but the drivers never showed any signs of damage. It is nice to see that there are a few people out there that still enjoy these speakers like I do.

Phase Linear Adromeda-3
I've sent my old Phase Linear speakers to an in-law to store till I had time to set them up in the new home. As all owners of Andromeda speakers know, they are very fragile and hard to move. He has, for all intents, destroyed the speakers and I am forced to replace all of the speakers. Is there anyone who can help with replacement speakers for both the panels and subwoofer?

There is a lot to be said of a speaker system that is about 23 years old and can still perform with some of the best of today's systems. I have owned this system since new and to this day am still amazed at what it is capable of in terms of sheer presence and volume of clean, transparent sound quality. I have played with it over the years and repositioned a tweeter in each of the main panels to further open up the sound area in my listening room. Each panel contains 5 tweeters (four facing upward with diffusers and one facing forward), two 4" midrange (one firing forward, the other to the rear), and two 8" midbass drivers (both facing forward. The bass module contains 2 twelve in subs, one for each channel. The system is conservatively rated to handle 300 watts RMS per channel @ 8 ohms. The nominal impedance for the whole system is 6 ohms and my current amp. is pushing approximately 750 watts RMS into each channel without any problems. The sound from this system is "awesome." I know that there will be a few out there that are thinking I'm "living in the past" as far as sound quality goes. To that I will simply say that I have had many an audiophile, that has owned a system worth many, many times what I have in mine, listen to several types of music with me in my listening room. Each one has left the room not believing what he has just listened to. One person was even blindfolded and not told what the system was. He tried to guess and ended up thinking it was either a set of upper end Martin Logans working with an 15" to 18" sub which he wouldn't commit to naming, or simply a hybrid system put together by someone who knew good sound and correct placement of all the speakers in the room etc. Anyway, I've bragged enough. I just had to let the audio world know what can be achieved with some time, effort and a little knowledge of what good sound should be. I'm no genius and cerainly know that there are some extremely fine audio systems in today's marketplace. Money can almost buy perfectin in sound these days. But for what I have invested in this system over the years I can honestly say that I have never heard another high end system that, in reality, actually sounded any better. In bit and pieces, yes because I do know that the newer tweeters today will produce a slightly cleaner and sweeter sound. And believe it or not I am considering replacing all 10 tweeters shortly with one that I believe will accomplish just that. One other thing, with regards to bottom end. I have played several CD's that contain some very low bass. I'm talking in the sub 20hz range. My listening room has been "tuned" to the bass module and when one of these notes hits, it will make you feel like you are experiencing a subsonic earthquake inside of your body. (Actually scared one guy to where he got up and left the room.) I love to see the expressions on someone's face when a very low bass note comes sneaking into the room from out of nowhere and catches them totally off guard. That's my story on a system that probably only a handful of people will either remember or know about. If anyone else out there owns or has owned this system, I would love to hear from you. I have only run into one other person in all these years that owned it. I don't believe that there were very many made or sold as the old Phase Linear Corp. only sold them for slightly over a year or so. Eat your hearts out all of you with those "Six Figure Systems". At the same, enjoy that system because that's what it's all about no matter what the cost. If anyone is interested in discussing this system, please post a comment and I will list my email.

I got my PL Andromeda III system about 25 years ago. I talked the dealer into taking $600 for his floor demos. Biamp'd them with a pair of PL 400 amps, one for the towers and one for the sub. PL 3000 preamp and the 5000 tuner. Two years ago I bought a set of MartinLogan Arieus, and sat the PL's in a spare bedroom. Now I'm going to bring them back out and see how they work in my home theater 5.1, etc. In 25 years of poking around in audio stores, I don't believe I've heard better sound. Mind you, I've heard lots of different sound, but none better. With the little "motion control module" turned up, the PL's could throw a soundstage right into your lap.
