Utterly transperant. Huge Soundstage. Not the lowest low end sound, but for a bookshelf it is astounding. Doesn't need ultra high end electronics to achieve good results. Though, the better the electronics the better the performance from this speaker. One word of warning: these speakers need to be played for 50-100 hours to break-in. I suggest doing 50 hours at a fairly loud level (while you are at work, etc.).

In this price range, I have heard none better! The Studio 40 has the most detail and imaging of any Paradigm Reference line speaker (especially clear mid-bass).

10/10 all the way. Get a discount at audiogon.com from the classified sales (you can get 40's for as little as $700+ shipping used).

I use a pair of Parasound HCA-1000 amps to drive these and the mid and highs are crisp without being edgy. Bass is full even for a bookshelf speaker. When matched with the PW-2200 sub or the Servo 15 they truly shine.

I just got back from Montreal, where I finally found a shop that had the Paradigms and the B&W 602s. I had just about settled on the B&Ws, but figured I had to check out the Paradigms while in Canada.

The Studio 40s and the 602s are the most similar-sounding speakers I have heard from different manufacturers. They are of similar size and price. The 602s are two-way, however.

The decision between these two was difficult. My priority was tight bass and non-boxiness, and of course the strong upper-range performance one should expect from any modern speaker. One some types of music, there wasn't much difference. For example, the beginning of Danny Elfman's Edward Scissorhands soundtrack was rendered equally well by both brands.

The 602s may have had slightly lower raw bass extension, but maybe it just a matter of balance. Their more laid-back treble and upper midrange gave them a more mellow sound. In the end, the crispness of the Studio 40s gave them the edge. The only risk is an overly strident sound, but I decided it probably wouldn't be a problem.

For your info, I paid $975 Canadian at Layton Audio. Take off about $100 Canadian for tax (which non-residents can get back), and that gives you $620 U.S. for the pair. Seems like a good deal.
