skips/freezes way too much, even on fresh new movie disks right of the shelf, makes movies unwatchable

Sharp DV-600U
It does not play VCD discs at all. When the same VCD discs are tested on another manufacturer player, the VCD disc play without any problem. Contacted the Sharp tennical support by emails but no response either. Avoid.

It does not play VCD. I have tried all kind of VCD and no luck. As soon as it start to play it eject the disc. Yes I know for sure I have tried original VCDs only. I also notice the heat problem and still effect. it also says that AC3 ready-does this mean that it is built in or not? I am not happy with it all.

Sharp DV-600U
Pros: Video and Audio, Size and Price
Cons: Menu navigation buttons on remote

The audio quality on this player is
amazing. Think of the Sharp DV-600U as
an incredibly good CD player that happens
to play DVD. I really want to emphasize
how impressed I've been with the sound.

The picture is also fantastic. I haven't
seen even a single digital artifact. The
in-player letterboxing looks great. Layer
changes are noticable, but fast. "The
Matrix" plays 100% AOK. Component outputs.

The black-than-black PLUGE signal on Video
Essentials isn't passed and there's no
reverse slow-motion. No bit-rate counter.
No built-in Dolby Digital decoder, but it
has both electrical and optical digital
outputs. In other words, no bells-and-whistles
-- just a great, VERY small, cheap DVD player.
It's also very quiet compared to lots of
other makes and models.

Some DV-600U's have been twitchy. But mine has
been fine, as has a friend's unit. Both made
10/99. One thing's for sure -- the menu
navigation buttons on the remote are totally
done wrong. And the eject button should be
bigger. There was no reason to make the Standby
button so big. The player goes into Standby on
its own anyway.

For $180, this is definitely the player to try
if you're going for the absolute bottom end.

It's a great unit for the price, but I am wondering if it has true DTS output?
The remote is a pain to use sometimes.

I have also noticed the problem when it gets too hot. To me it is tolerable for the price. How can you beat less than $200 with all the extras that this bad boy offers. If you are poor like me, you won't find a better value. Also, I suggest that if you rent DVD's, do so at your own risk. They're like a box of chocolates...

How can you beat this for under $200? Great features, incredible value! Sound is great for CD and DVD virtual surround (only have stereo system). My 500 line TV shows off the great video quality of the S-video outputs. Did notice scintalation when camera panned roof-tops during 'Matrix' but this may be DVD compression/encoding artifact. Bad disks or dirt may cause some brief track-loss noticed in previous review. Have my unit in hot cabinet and run it for hours playing CDs w/ no hiccups. Remote does job well but hard to use in the dark.

Recomend one for every TV.

Sharp DV-600U
Well this is the cheapest DVD-player that has everything. (DD/DTS coax and optical outputs, composite-video, S-video (cable included), component-video)
I got it at Costco last week when they have additional $20 off...

I think it has a problem when it gets too hot. Toward the end of the second movies, it tried to sync up the video with the audio. (it was pausing for a second several time until I stop it and resume again, then everything back to normal.)
