Sharp DV-550U
I really like my DV-550U.... it's played all movies I've tried, except one
that was defective (the disc, not the machine), and even reads severely
scratched rental discs without a single pause or skip. The gamma picture
enhancement is fantastic, and the digital super picture enhancement is
subtle but does improve image quality somewhat. As an added bonus, the size
fits perfectly in my video-game console rack-- just had to remove my N64.

Feature-wise good. Frame freeze seems to happen a lot which is very annoying. Gamma adjustment is cool. The other picture enhancement (supposed to make the picture sharper) does not show observable difference for picture quality. Also it does not play some CD titles for no reason.

Sharp DV-550U
The Sharp DV-550U is a cute little DVD player with component video and DD
output (no DTS).

For DVD playback, the picture looks good to me. I found the Digital Gamma
Correction and Digital Super Picture features are of little use. Also, load
time is significantly longer than my Sony.

For VCD playback, there are lots of glitches and problems. Worse yet, some
VCDs which played fine on other players (Sony and Panasonic) have difficulty
loading (not to mention playing) on this machine. I've tested multiple
machines with multiple VCDs and the symptoms are the same. So I really
believe there is some bug with the machine design.

Nonetheless, if VCD is not your concern, this could be the perfect machine when
space is tight, e.g. a dorm room or DVD for the bedroom.

I've only had this unit a short while and while it's a little fussy about VCDs (particularly those of suspect origin) it plays DVDs well. It's small, easy to use, has decoded output (on my model) and the digital gamma is beaut for Xfiles!
Only real complaint is that it won't touch any CDR media.
