So far this player is way superior to my Toshiba 3006 in picture quality, sound quality, and functionality.

I bought the DV-S5 (dont really know what the differences are, but for sure its not THX certified) to replace my very aging cd player. The picture quality is amazing and the sound from movie is good too even though I am only using my stereo amp (going to buy a dts amp soon, any suggestions?). However, I am a bit disappointed with CD audio. It seems to lack a bit of bass, stereo image is vague and tiring after a little while. Having said this, the treble is a lot more detailed than my old cd player (well, its kind of expected). I think this is a great player and I would recommend this to anyone (especially for the price I paid: 450 US)

I just picked up the DV-05 this weekend. I've had four DVD players so far, and this is by far the best player and best value in or out of it's price range. It outperformed both the A310 and S7000 players. My only nitpicks are that the remote isn't illuminated (not just a problem with this unit) and that it could benefit from a better/less resonant chassis. A sturdy stand is in order to get the absolute best performance. These qwibbles aside, this is an outstanding player and should be considered by all who don't want to or can't spring for the DV-S9 or DVD-5000.

Pioneer Elite DV-05
I would like to start of by saying that I've been through 6 dvd
players looking for just the right one and with the Pioneer Elite
THX DV-05 I finally found it. At first I had a the Toshiba SD-2008
some movies did not play. Then I had the Sony DVP-S3000 (No Component
Out Put or dts). When I heard that Sony was coming out with a S7700 I
sold my S3000 and purchased the S7000 and was planing to return it
before the 30 day limit was up. Day 28 came and still know S7700 so I
retuned the 7000 (which is a great player but could not pass dts) and
purchased the Toshiba SD2108. This was a great player, it had everything
I needed but there was one problem, When you watch anamorphic widescreen
movies on a 4:3 tv, edges and Shiny objects start jittering and dancing
up and down. To make a long story short, the S7700 finally came out and I
was so disappointed in it. The 7700 did not pass the blacker then black
Pluge test on VE DVD which made the 2108 picture more pleasing. Also when use component out puts with the 7700 going into Sony 32XBR48 TV You get little
lines that scroll across the screen. I returned the player and picked up
the Toshiba SD-3108 hopeing it fixed the jitter but it did not. Is there a
perfect player out there? If there is it would have to be the Pioneer Elite
THX DV-05 It has everything I need. Picture is the best I've seen menus are
great. All the options I need it has (dts component outs great anolog outputs)

I know this was a long comment but I want to let people know that I went
through alot of players in the $1,200 range and if their is one DVD player that really is the best it would be the Pioneer Elite DV-05 Ultra THX DVD Player.

Sam....

I picked up my new DV-05 Saturday Dec. 12! Compared the DV-05 to the Sony 7000 and the Pioneer exceeds in both video and audio performance! Regarding features, the DV-05 passes 96/24 audio (does not convert to 48/20), passes the "blacker than black test" on Video Essentials (the DV-09 does not), has parallel video output (s-video and component out active at same time to drive multiple monitors), plays CD-R, bit rate display, DNR, horizontal sharpness, and can adjust the display level of brightness( I believe 2 levels of brightness then off). All movies that did not play correctly on the Sony 7000 (Ninja Scroll, Hunt For Red October, Ghost In The Darkness, etc.) play flawlessly on the DV-05. Again, the audio and video quality of the DV-05 is excellent. The DV-05 will make a fantastic addition to any home theater.

Well I don't have this player myself but a friend of mine just got it and it does look incredible and it is an incredible machine. Although I think they priced it a bit high because of it's looks and style. So If you want a fancy looking machine then this is the one. I think my friend got it for $1200 at J&R Music world

Just purchased one mailorder from AVI Electronics for $710 including shipping.
They appear to be an authorized dealer (see post at AVI under mailorder).

I was told most other brands were all made by Panasonic and that for DVD
Pioneer was the way to go.

I too am disappointed in this player, specifically in its ability (or lack thereof) in downconverting anamorphically enhanced DVDs to 4:3 monitors.

The picture looks soft and full of artifacts (especially in dark areas of the screen).

While evaluating a Runco 5800 in a store, and using my Pioneer DV-05, I hooked up a Yamaha S700 that was sitting there and thought the picture was beautiful (when downconverting). Virtually no artifacts and the picture looked razor sharp. (The Yamaha is a Panasonic 310, spruced up a little).

I bought their Yamaha machine (which was a demo). The Pioneer does a great job when it doesn't have to downconvert; I have no problems with its performance in this area. But if you have lots of DVDs that are 16:9 enhanced and need to display on a 4:3 monitor, steer clear of the Pioneer DV-05.

I recently purchased this player and am somewhat disappointed. Though it does offer a beautiful picture I, unlike the previous poster, noticed several motion artifacts when watching T2-Judgement Day (widescreen 2.35 anamorphic). This surprised me given the positive reviews of this product (also in its thedigitalbits review where the reviewer said there was no artifacting).

I though that maybe it was the software, but when I played it through a friends' Panasonic A310 ($300 bucks cheaper) there was no artifacting??

I've tried watching it in every visual format and tried to reduce it by adjusting the DNR and other picture variables but to no avail.

The player is hooked up with a composite video cable currently.
Would an SVHS connection cure this malady, do I have a defective player, or is there some other adjustment that I am unaware of?

Please help before I return the player in exchange for a Denon3000 or Panasonic model!.

Thank you

Can you comment on the downconversion of anamorphic titles on a 4:3 display?
