Very good receiver for the price I payed (350) replaced my denon 1800 (wanted thx) now I dont know why. Not any noticable difference between DTS and THX. Both (to me) sound idential. And If I were spending 1 large Ide take more reciever with dts over a thx reciever.
Back to reciever: Excellent sound. 90 watts.. plays like a 100 plus receiver.
My personal standard: Absolutely dead quiet when no input. non of the low hum like most receivers. (thats what sold me on the denon. Loads of plugs for equipment. 3 ac plugs.
what I dont like: Subwoofer does not work in stereo mode. UNLESS you switch speaker size to small when you play music. So I dont use the sub with music. (AR stature s50s already have plenty of bass. but not thumping like a sub). remote takes getting use too. and isnt backlit long enough for those who SHOULD be wearing glasses. If you find one ( i know its 3 yrs old) for under 500 grab it up. you wont ever be disapointed in your choice.

I just got this unit and am running it only through 3 speakers now, B&W 6 series.. Very nice sounding and easy to use.. The one annyoing thing is that when you change DSP modes the sound cuts out for a second. Also the plastic face plate make sit look a little less high end. The remote is easy to use, could be backlit a little longer. Works fine with all my other equipment as well. Got it for 600.. Definitely worth it for the price.

I purchased this unit after returning an Onkyo TXDS-777(B) that had the well-known hum problem. I chose Pioneer over Denon, Yamaha and others since I didn't want to give up the THX Select certification of the Onkyo. It's the only one in this price range with THX.

It's a solidly built reciever with a full feature set, and handsome to boot. It is reasonably powerful and works great in my small listening/viewing room. With larger rooms & more demanding speakers, you might want more power. The amps are clean, very detailed, with just a little hiss, not audible with program material. The only area lacking is in imaging. Both the Onkyo 777 and my older Onkyo DPL receiver produced a wide, deep soundstage. The Pioneer tends to place most sound in the speakers, not around or between them. Vocals, which should be in the center, end up coming from midway between the center point and the front right speaker in many, though not all recordings. This generally occurs in the stereo mode. If I use the "Jazz" mode, and lower the effect level, the center channel speaker anchors the vocals in the center nicely. The DSP modes in general are more useful than you'd expect, especially if you lower the effect level. The DD, DTS and DPL modes are excellent - clear dialogue, realistic effects and plenty of dynamic range. The THX performs well with DPL soundtracks and too-bright soundtracks. No trouble switching between DD, DTS and DPL source material. The remote is wonderful: Backlit, programmable and very easy to use. The bass management is also good, it feeds my powered sub with plenty of signal and LFEs. Levels on all 5.1 channels are adjustable on the fly - you can adjust levels by ear while listening to a program without using the test-tone generator. The FM section is good. The unit runs a bit warm, but never gets hot, and I'm running it with the 6 ohm setting, and have a hodge-podge of speakers with different loads. I'm hoping better speakers will help produce a wider/deeper soundstage, but until I upgrade speakers, I am happy with the way my system sounds. I rate this unit an "8" - minus 1 for the hiss, minus 1 for the lack of good imaging.

This is a Fantastic sounding reciever. It sounds very smooth with crystal clear detail. Setting it up is breeze. It is THX Select certified. You lose 10-30w of power, multiroom cababilities and a rf modulator compared to Pioneer Elite's higher priced units, but at less than $700 I don't think there is a better reciever on the market for the money. The remote is even great. I was able program it to control all the rest of my gear. The backlighting turns off fairly quickly, but once you become familiar with it, it's not a problem. Another quirk of the reciever is that the sub output cuts off if you select a music dsp soundfield with your front speakers selected to large. It works fine while watching movies though. You just have to change the setting of you front speakers from large to small and the sub turns back on for listening to music. The sound and the ease of use of this reciever far outshines any of it's minor problems.
