I've been using mine for 3 years and the only pre-amp I would even consider is the B&K Reference 30.

I have this together with my AV5000 II and their combination is absolutely the pair to beat in their price range.Hometheater performance is where this puppies really show off, stereo is better than average, I mean way better than average, I'm really streching in finding a fault here.

While it has a few quirks, (volume control) the bottom line is the sound. This unit sounds awesome. The sound is detailed and dynamic. The 4 channel stereo mode is great for listening to music CD's. The remote is pretty good too. Worth every penny.

I have owned a B&K Reference 20, for approximately eight months, and I've been completely satisfied with its performance. Dolby Digital and DTS material sound incredible. The bass is 'warm', well-controlled, and deep; with highs that are clean and dynamic. There isn't any noise. This is a big improvement over the Carver CT-17 that it replaced.

This unit has more than enough optical and coaxial inputs, very flexible setup options, includes s-video switching, and has a very good learning remote. The only shortcoming I've found is the lack of a phono input, which was remedied by a stand-alone phono pre amp.

Great sounding!!! Has deep rich bass and wonderful mids. My speakers are Polk RT 20p's and they sound noticeably better than before with a Yamaha receiver. This is my first menu intensive system so the setup for the speakers took a well to get dialed in and now the more I play it the more I realize how versatile and well thought out the different modes for sound are. For instance adjusting the "LFE" really helps a lot to personalize the system to your tastes. Am also very impressed with B&K customer reps. Only complaint is FM tuner section is not as strong puliing in stations as my old system but a good antenna has remedied that.

B&K Reference 20
After *several* problems with the B&K AVR202 (unit control freezing up
on both front panel and remote, sound cutting out, volume control
turning on `Help' menu), I decided to go with components and purchased
the Reference 20 because of its price/sound quality.

The B&K Reference 20 had *exactly* the same problems!

In my opinion, a $2400 piece of electronics equipment that
consistently fails in this manner deserves a rating of zero,
regardless of its sound quality.

I've absolutely given up on B&K and am moving up to a Proceed AVP or
Lexicon DC-1.

B&K Reference 20
I bought this unit to replace my terrible Denon AVR-5600. It was the best purchase I've ever made. The sound quality for both music and home theater is the best I've ever heard. One could spend twice what I spent and not do better. I would suggest the Reference 20 with the AV5000 amp to anyone who is serious about high fidelity.
