Sony TA-E9000ES
Three years later and there is still nothing on the market that can match this pre/pro in terms of sound/image quality, input/output flexibility vs. cost. This is an outstanding value in a pre/pro unit and they are available for well under $1,000.0 now. There is literally NOTHING that can match it for less than $3,000.00USD and to surpass the TA-E9000ES by any significant margin will cost you very dearly.

I've just updated to firmware version 2.01 which adds virtual Dolby 6.1 matrix surround and virtual EX surround, this sounds great if your speakers are placed well and you can find EX encoded material.

But the most interesting change has been how much the update dropped the sound floor. In pure 2 channel mode with DSP off using a digital input from a dedicated high-end Sony ES cd player, a mid model Sony DVD player or a Pioneer Elite LaserDisc player the sound is amazing. Sound now is comming out of an almost pure black background on good discs with solo voices (including insturmentals), and the dynamics have improved tremendously. The very top end is now a little smoother than the update last year from Sony (1.18c), which was a major break through over version 1.04 (original release), and 1.10.

If there is anything lacking it is a lack of 7.1 inputs (but nothing designed in 1995 or 1996 has them), and a lack of analog inputs for non-digital sources or sources that cannot be decoded by the processor (SADC, discreet 7.1 etc.).

OUTSTANDING product and an even more outstanding VALUE now!!!

Sony TA-E9000ES
I have compared every processor on the market side by side with the ta-e9000es, and the theater like sound quality is unprecedented by the Sony. The so-called Reference processors like Krell and Theta Casanova, or any of the more expensive exotic ones that reviewers just cannot be perfectly honest about; these are the grainy electronic sounding decoders, bringing this sound abruptly from each speaker. The Sony naturally pans high quality sound with their expertise exactly where the action is happening, smoothly and powerfully with every detail clearly. Of course reviewers mix their words with the more exotic processors that when you hear anything harsh from them, don't blame the messenger. You get the real digital expertise and high quality electronics from Sony who master all our great theater sound tracks in SDDS.

Sony TA-E9000ES
Best I've heard so far, don't understand the problems everybody says about the remote, mine's fine with 1.18c firmware upgrade. made my own docking station to eliminate battery consumption.

Sony TA-E9000ES
A great product for the money. I upgraded from a Sony 1000ESD, which performed nobly in my system for about 10 years, without becoming obsolete until the advent of Dolby Digital and DTS. The only negative with the 9000ES, was that it did not come with the latest firmware upgrade. However, it was very easy to update the preamp after downloading the latest firmware from the Sony web site. I would appear that the "upgradability" is a huge plus, and I can expect the same state of the art performance for many years to come. This helps justify the expense of this piece of equipment. It is a comfort to that it will not be obsolete immediately after I bought it. Sound and performance are exellent. Set up was very easy and the manual exceptionally clear and useful, considering the complexity of this product. An excellent performer as well as a great value.

Sony TA-E9000ES
I played with this unit in my home for a couple of days. I think it sounds horrible. Everything that comes out of the speakers sounds synthesized and un-natural. Music is way overly bright, bass and mid-range is lacking and un-dynamic. I spent plenty of time getting used to all of the settings and adjustments. I exchanged it for a B&K Reference 20 that sounds awesome.

Sony TA-E9000ES
Very easy to use with many features, practically any subwoofer frequency you want. The equalizer was easy to program and was very flexible. However, if you are looking for a better sound stage and imaging try the Rotel RSP-985 for around $1850. The Rotel does have a few quirks with the volume knob and not very easy to use at first. Your choice: sound quality or ease of use.
