Same as my comments on the 2080. Amps are cloudy and processing is average. The extra features of the 2090 add little value (except for the s-video inputs/output).

Kenwood VR-2090
Followup to my Bad VR-2090 --

I took the unit back to Good Guys, where they found another unit and hooked it up. Same problem! No audio...

They opened a new box and hooked up another VR-2090... No audio...

Ok, so they opened yet another box, but this time a VR-2080... No audio...

After spending two hours getting ahold of Kenwood dealer support, Kenwood broke down and admitted that there was a "5-7% return rate" on these two models. Sounds more like 100% to me..

Turns out that when they specced the digital pre-amp board inside the chassis, they placed a fuse with too low of a rating in it, and while they passed the in-factory testing, THEY BLOW ALMOST IMMEDIATELY WHEN YOU HOOK A REAL AUDIO SOURCE TO IT... But of course all the new ones going out work fine now... so they say.

Sounds like a definite quality control issue to me.

Anyways, since I went through all the hassle and potentially saved them some more pissed off customers, Good Guys gave me a sweet deal on that Yamaha RX-V995 I was drooling over. I'm not looking back =)

Kenwood VR-2090
Just picked up an "Open Box Special" at Good Guys for $699. Got home to find that the preamp is fried and it does not recognize a AC3 coax input. I put it in "Stereo" (2 channel) mode and the level from the speakers at max sounds like they are running from a headphone jack. I am taking it back along with some attitude to the sales guy who sold it to me. I guess some shops don't even verify that returns work before reselling them...

The remote for this is a joke. Very nice concept, but the execution leaves much to be desired. The response of the joystick type controller is slow, and the 2-way IR is slower. Press volume then press it again and hold it will confuse the poor thing.

The unit is pretty slick and the integrated amplifier seems very quiet even turned to maximum. Too bad I can't play anything through it that comes close to a preamp level =(

If not for the remote (I got *plenty* of use of it trying to go through the setups to find what was wrong with the main unit), I'd demand another one or even wait for a factory fix. As it is, I believe I'll bring a Yamaha RX-V995 home with me today instead....
