Description:Only says Dolby Pro-Logic on the front, but DOES support Dolby Digital via
Coax, and has a built-in FR Demodulator input for Laser Disc players.

HOWEVER, Dolby Digital (AC-3) is *BROKEN* for DVD players as it was released
BEFORE anything supported the AC-3 inputs. You must power cycle the unit to

make the Dolby Digital "kick in " .. Kenwood offers free upgrades for these receivers. (I am unsure if they will pay the $50 shipping for this beast, though.)

Anyone considering to buy this for DVD Dolby Digital, look elsewhere. It is
a good unit, but out of the box, Dolby Digital is broken. You may find a lot
of these at tempting prices at OnSale. Fortunately, OnSale has a nice return policy.

Too much money for something that relies too much on a shitty remote. I got lucky and picked it up for pretty cheap ($500)....Whatever you do...do not pay full price for this hunk of shit.

If you lose the remote...your screwed. Does too many things that only the remote can access. The surround sound is subpar also. I bought mine at my local AAFES when I was stationed in Germany. I was just a young private at the time and thought more money was better.....boy was I wrong...stay away from it unless you have money to waste.(P.S. .... and I'm a die hard Kenwood fan too)

Can't do much without the remote but this receiver rivals all the Denon, Yamaha, HK, Onkyo receivers I have owned over the years but the MSRP on this thing was a whopping 5,400 dollars! Way too much money to spend on a receiver...

Hard to understand terminology for setting up. No comments at all on "Monitor out" I have had trouble since I bought it. One time it works fine and then you change something and nothing works.

Remote is atrocious. If you have no video, you have no way of setting up the system. Universal remotes do not support many of the features on this system. Other than the remote, it was a decent system for its time. Beware some DVD players are incompatible, but this is an LD-era item. Also the OSD is pretty sketchy and confusing on many of the settings. Still, the sound is nice. It's a good item for a secondary system with older components, or perhaps to power the computer room. Make sure you get a good price, though, I paid $500 5 years ago or so.

By the way, in Holland the price of this receiver hasn't reduced a single bit, and I also think that most people here have forgotten that the 990d has the best and most expensive Dolby Digital decoding chip that was ever built. Better than in Yamaha and Onkyo receivers. Maybe because the people above are discussing the Vs-model, I can't come to another conclusion. I find the comments quite strange, and furthermore I'd like to say that if one says 'this receiver is a piece of shit' and rates the receiver at '0', I personally don't take this comment seriously, because he hasn't got the faintest argument whatsoever, and besides that, it is not possible to give even the worst receiver ever sold on the market a rating as low as this one.
