These have been selling for aroung $500 closeout. At this price it is a fantastic bargin. Very quite, excellent DPL and DD. Good features, great remote, nice looking piece also. The closest competition is the AV-560 that adds DTS (is DTS losing groung for DVD?) and is sold for the same retail price as the 550 but that's twice as much as you can get the 550 for. I have seen some reviews that don't speak well of this but I can't agrree at all, must have been a defective unit. Repair it! It's got a three year warranty!

This unit also sucks. If you want DD decoding and a good remote and you have a tin ear or tintinus and you have no money and a bad credit rating then this unit has your name on it.

Excellent performance and input/output control (even has multi-room settings). Decent (although small) set of effects settings. Front panel design somewhat "industrial" and cluttered--AV-600 front panel much better executed. No switched AC outlets. No headphone jack. But, remote is W-O-N-D-E-R-F-U-L. Very good value.

No upgrade path to DTS without discrete inputs.

Marantz AV-550
Incredible sound and performance from a preamp that is
also very user friendly. The Dolby Digital decoder does
a great job of recreating the atmosphere of movie soundtracks.

Highly recommended.

Marantz AV-550
This component is a great value (street price 850-950) for a preamp with AC-3 decoding capabilities. In addition, contains the Re-EQ benefits of THX. Sound quality is quite good. However, those seeking many bells and whistles should look elsewhere. The RC-2000II remote is a definite improvement over its predecessor (longer battery life, dedicated ch+ and ch- buttons, more central location of player control button group, non-volatile memory).
