No Optical Digital Input! Only 2 Coaxial Digital Inputs. For Laser Disc Lovers, it has an AC-3 Digital Input. The 100 x 5 watts per channel at 8 ohms is excellent. Good raw power to drive the largest speakers, i.e. Polk SDA-SRS. How do I know, I own them!!

I've had this receiver for a few years, and it still sounds great. Using with LD, DVD, and OTA HDTV and all work great in Dolby Digital. It would be nice if it had DTS but it's so old that DTS wasn't available when it was made! Sounds great, highly recommended if you find one used.

I was very unhappy with this reciever. I found that in the Pro-Logic mode it would have several annoying drop outs (on the rears) when any of the DSP's were active, It also had alot of background noise when listening to CD's. The lack of on-screen was frustrating as the on display programing is very difficult to use, it has hokey speaker connectors (no big wire) no fan, and no true seperate A+B, so if your speakers were not very compatible, forget about listening to all four. About the only thing it did have that I liked was 5.1. I took it back to the dealer and traded up to the VSX-07, which for the extra money, seems night and day a better unit.

Pioneer VSX-D606S
This is a great receiver. I got it for a Third Room Theater. The Distortion amount is very little (which is mainly due to the low S/N Ratio). No one can complain about this receiver unless you expect a Yamaha RX-V2092 performance from a smaller priced receiver.

to the Last 2 Reviewers. First of all Best Buy does not use the Pioneer VSX-D607S they use the VSX-D606S. The 607 is an upgrade with no Demodulator which drove the price down. To the 2nd to last reviewer before me. There is bass redirection in Pro-Logic and you have to be kinda dumb (no offense) to think that there wouldn't be. Dolby Laboratories (www.dolby.com) has a set of standards, 1 is that the Surround Channel has at least a 15ms delay and NR, 2 is that there has to be at least a Normal Mode for Pro-Logic and Wide is a Option, 3 is that the Normal Mode has to effect the Surround Channel too and that there has to be a 7khz low pass filter.

This last guy is talking out his ass, btw, lurn two spel. The 607 has been a great DD receiver so far, the adjustments take a little getting used to. This is the same receiver Best Buy uses for their DVD demo, that setup sounds amazing. I bought an open box special for $248, it was originally $599. I went back because one of the channels didn't have output. upon returning, I convinced the manager to give me a brand new one at the half price I paid, which made the deal even sweeter. For less than $250, it sounds crystal clear, T2 and Twister blew me away in AC-3 DD.

Pioneer VSX-D606S
I listened to the 607. This thing had no bass redirection from the center to the mains in Pro-logic or any redirection from the rears or center for DD to the mains. The thing is useless if you have true audiophile speakers that do not need a powered subwoofer and would sound worse if one is used. When will these companies learn. Is this shoddy engineering due to the Japanese recession? If so, BUYER BEWARE. In my opinion you are better to wait to upgrade to DD. How long is hard to say, they had now over two years to get this straightened out and don't seem to know how. It really isn't that difficult if your not cheap about designing. If you are one of the few who owns a separate sub, the setup of this thing is the worst design I've seen and is very irritating to use. You change many options at once in a round the clock fashion. If you put only one wrong option in, you must start fresh with all the options, very, very, irritating. I can not recommend this to any audiophile. If you are a videophile you must not be concerned about music reproduction because I haven't heard anyone who is upset about having to purchase a powered subwoofer to get any bass output in the surround modes which the setup would take to stereo only listening also. The main Idea for Pro-logic and DD is to get the best sound not degraded sound from having to use a separate powered subwoofer which can be very hard to get matched to your main speakers without electronic setup equipment which only a handful of dealers will let you use or themselves come out and install for you at an added cost. Better to get full range speakers in long run for performance and less hastle.

Pioneer VSX-D606S
I have to say that I am very happy with this receiver. The price is good,
performance is excelent. I am using Pioneer CD changer, DV-500 and Tape Deck
It all integrates perfect. DD is very nice, clear and crisp. Here I have to point out that DD effects depend on the software. Those titles like the 5th element sound perfect. For the demonstration of rear channel separation use L.A. Confidential. All in all perfect unit. The remote is the best on the market. It can learn, it can be set to control other units etc. In Pro Logic Mode it is good, but I have seen better. Sound fields are good. It is not an eazy job to set up this unit properly. Many people will have the problem with that. But if you do set it up as it should be, this unit will sound outstanding.

I've been a user of Pioneer receivers for a while now. In fact, I'm replacing my current Pioneer ProLogic with this Digital one. So far, not one complaint yet. I'm using a Toshiba SD3107 DVD player with this receiver, and all the sound is beautiful! Clear separation on all speakers, wonderful ambiance with 5 different sound fields. All in all, a great receiver, and a wonderful price. Bought it at my local Best Buy 4/2/98 for $462.00 !!! Beat that!!!

I'll give it an "A" for Price. "B" for Functionality. "D" for sound when the Rear-effect channels are used. Lots of noise and distortion. The AC-3 RF demodulator is an unexpected bonus if you have a LD Player. For Better sound at around the same bargin price, try a Technics SA-X720 & SCH-AC300 DD Decoder. Much better sounding and input trims for the Rear Effects and Center speakers. Good value. Rob.
