Pros: Great price! Quality sound and features found only in higher priced receivers. Cons: no universal remote and no S-video. Overall, pros outweigh the cons by a mile. Highly recommended.

This unit performs way over my expectations. I've had it for 6 months now, and I'm getting more pleased with it for every day that's going by. And I'm not saying this for nothing, I've tested it against several receivers and stereo-amps who costs up too twice as much, and still found out that the Teac is the best. (ex.: Denon AVC3800 and AVR2700, NAD 319, Onkyo TX-DS656, Sony STR-DB 925, Harman-Kardon AVR75 and 85 and so on...)

The sound is clear, (very) powerful, detailed and natural in both surround and stereo. And the solution is good. The watt is 5*100 W RMS in surround and 2*130 W RMS in stereo. (In stereo it's more powerful than NAD's 319 with 2*125w RMS)
It has been testet in Hemmabio nr. 1/99 (a serious Swedish magazine), it came out on the top with Akai's AA-V1500.

The few reasons for not giving this unit a 10, is that it lacks S-video, has quite small terminals and a "middle" remote. Accept this, it's a clear 10!!!

This unit is very good, and is absolutely worth buying for people who wants excellent sound in both stereo and Dolby Digital-and ProLogic.

With AC-3 being non-high fidelity format that it is, buyers shouldn't be too demanding of any AV receiver, no matter the price.
I was initially impressed, a big chunk like this TEAC looks too good for the price. However, with all cost cutting there's a the delemma of functionality versus performance. It seems the TEAC designers went for the former.
The hiss in the pre-amp stage (I've got it connected to my hifi power-amp) is bad even with the volume all the way down. The same goes for the power-amps of the receiver - the surround channels are getting plenty of hiss too.
Also, the huge transformer (which is next to the preamp output stage - bad, bad place to put these) hasn't been properly insulated - it produces magnetic interference on the TV (about 10cm below it).
At its low price, maybe it is aimed at very budget set-ups where the speakers are neglecting anything above 5Khz (or so, where the hiss is), but in a proper set-up it's nowhere near acceptable.

THis unit beat all my expectations. I AB'd it to the Yamaha 793 and while there were slight differences ..they were more a matter of taste than one being better. Price though went hands down to the TEAC this unit was about half the price of all the comparabl\e models out there. Are there reasons it only got an 8..yes no svideo switching LOL but for this money how can I really complain..If I could sum it up in a word....BARGAIN..it even has pre outs for all channels which in my system will be driving my new power amps ..caint hardly wait

I bought ths unit from Costco for $249.00. It was a deal I could not pass up. Even though I have had this unit for only a week I have been very impressed by the sound quality. It seems to me that this unit produces a better sound from my speakers in stereo mode than my previous receiver which cost me much more. The highs are higher and the lows are lower. Also, in Dolby Digital Mode I can really appreciate the 5.1 sound separation over Dolby Pro-Logic Mode. Another nice feature was the Quick Start Manual which walked me through the set-up procedure rather efficiently.

On the downside, there are numerous function buttons which will cause you to have your owners manual in hand, and the preset channel function has a slight delay before the next channel kicks in (not really a big deal), and for folks that use larger size speaker cables the connections could pose a problem.

Overall, for the money I spent and all the features that this unit has to offer, including the great sound, I have no problem giving this unit a rating of 9. To me this unit is a great deal for folks that don't have a lot of money to spend on a home theater system. Only time will tell if my opinion changes.

So far this unit has performed very well. This receiver is capable of putting out up to 230 watts per channel in stereo mode according to Teac tech service. So you need to use speakers rated for at least 150 watts per channel. I have had no problems and enjoy the excellent sound quality of this unit.

Got it for $399 at Price Costco. I haven't had any problem with it what so ever. The amps and wattage don't seem as warm as I'd like, but the volume will come through. Basses are deep and trebbles chirp and sing fine. This receiver may be on the bottom of the food chain of Digital Dolby receivers, but hell, for $399??!! That's not a bad deal with the options it gives (see specs above). Turning the volume to loud levels didn't seem to create any distortion or clipping. The extra pre outs that this unit has are very helpful; build yourself a theater!! They allow you to use this unit simply as a pre amp that will drive the Dolby Digital Sound as well. Very convenient. and it has preouts for all six signals. For those of us that don't have a lot of money to spend on DD equipment, this is a terrific deal. I just watched "Contact" last night from laserdisc (AC-3), and it whirrled and exploded in my room quite well. I was very pleased. Hey, it was a fine film too.

This unit lacks a universal/ learning remote. Bigtime. Why didn't they do that? I have 6 remotes flying around; what a pain. I'd say that was the worst of this unit. The speaker terminals are very small. People that have monster cables are not going to have fun.

It also has an interesting feature called "night mode" which subtly brings down the bass and other: "When very dynamic movie soundtracks are played at low volume, such as late at night, you can use Night Mode to apply appopriate compression so that low level program content is not lost and high level effects are restrained." Kinda interesting. I guess this is if you have close neighbors.
