My review seems dated with the AVR 5700 out. However, I will restrain myself from rushing out to replace my AVR 5600 right away.

Pluses: It's very convenient to have so much switching capabilities. Besides connecting a cassette, turntable, two vcrs, DVD player, a minidisc deck, and big screen tv, which is great. Nonetheless, it would have been great to have an RF connector for my Pioneer laser disc player because I couldn't get the digitial inputs to accommodate both the DVD player and the laser disc player. So when I play my laser discs I have to use the analog connections.

Minues: My Definative Tech 2000 home theater speakers don't sound "warm" at all when I listen to music. I hold the reveiver accountable bacause they sounded fine in the listening room. (Please resist the temptation to lecture me about the impact of room acustics.) My sound has a harsh timbre heavy sound which requires me to turn up the bass control to "warm" up the music but then again, it's not enough. Clarity and "boom" of the overall sound is fine for music and movies. However, I can't boost the volume on the center channel for movies. Finally, the unit will "forget" and go silent requiring me to push the Power On switch "Off" for a minute before powering up again to "reset" it. This is annoying when it happens every three months or so.

It's disconcerting to read how often criticism of this units brings up the "musicalness" or lack of it when people review it. If you get one "used" it's a great unit but check it out with your speakers before you make the commitment to it as your primary amp.

I'm really curious about the 5700 now. Does it sound better with the Brown-Burrs DAC?

Denon AVR-5600
I recently purchased a 5600DTS. Since there is no entry for it I will post my opinion here. I have audtioned many receivers before purchasing this one. I was down to the Yamaha DSP-A1, B&K AVR202 and the 5600DTS. After extensive listening I chose the Denon. It seemed to handle serious power levels with greater ease than the others. Overall they were similar except for the power handling ability. Since I have relatively inefficient speakers I need all the power I can get. (Mirage 890i, Mirage MBS-2, Mirage MC-3) I have lived with it for a few months now and I only have a few very minor complaints....

The first is that the receiver will click back and forth between Dolby Digital 5.1 and prologic when a DVD enters the menu mode. I guess since at this point it doesn't sense the AC-3 digital bitstream it reverts back to porlogic. This is no big deal, because it always clicks back in time.

The second complaint deals with the lack of any display for DTS.

Third complaint is that the volume takes too long to go up or down. On my old receiver if I held vol up or vol down it would really change the volume levels fast.
And I would have liked one more coax digital input.

Again those complaints are rather minor. Overall I love the 5600DTS. It is extremely clean, and detailed. The 5 channel stereo is amazing. I was always an advocate of 2 channel stereo for music but the Denon really handles it well. I got mine for $1999 brand new. This was at a local retailer, so you might find it on the internet for even less. The price dropped to 2K once the 5700DTS was anounced. I have seen the 5600 (nonDTS) at auction sites go for $1600 or less.

Probably a good receiver but at this price, it should really sound better. Lack of definition and image. Compared with NAD's T770 (which is cheaper by the way) I don't see one good reason to buy the Denon. Sorry for the fans...

Denon AVR-5600
Great for home theater, and with the right speaker, cable and interconnect mix, pretty darned good for music too (I'm using B&W 801's with kimber silver speaker cable and audioquest quartz interconnects). Now that it's available with DTS from the factory it's even better!(it was always upgradable to DTS w/ an internal modification that didn't void the warranty, by www.msbtech.com -- useful info for anyone who owns the old model.)

I've had mine for 3 months and have loved it since the day I set it up.

Denon AVR-5600

While I am not the biggest fan of this receiver. It has recently become a product that is more competitive to the Yamaha
DSP A1 now that they added DTS processing. Yes folks that is correct. The Denon 5600 has DTS processing now.
It is a solid performer and has a nice 5 channel stereo mode. However, the DSP modes on the Yamaha DSP A1 in 7
channels is much better.
If DSP is not important to you and you have speakers that are not to bright, then the Denon 5600 may be a great choice
for your home theater setup.
Best of all, the price dropped and it can now be mail ordered brand new with a 2 year warranty for $1999 !!!!

Denon AVR-5600
I had the 5600 for only a couple of months before I replaced it with a B&K Reference 20 preamp / AV5000 amp. I paid $1900 for the new 5600 unit, which to me meant I would be getting a unit that would sound great for both home theater and music. Home theater was good at best. While music sounded aweful.

I should mention I'm using Atlantic Technolgy's Series 450 THX speakers, $5000. Obviously my main interest is in home theater. However, I expected a little more from the denon/Atlantic Technology mix.

After replacing the 5600 with the B&K units I am in heaven for both home theater as well as music. Simply put, B&K blows Denon's 5600 away. Music replication is increadible and home theater is more rich and realistic than the 5600. Of course my wallet is a bit thinner but if you're going to spend $2000 why not spend a little more ($3300) to get the sound you want.

Denon AVR-5600
I have heard better two-channel or stereo sound from other units. Bass management could be better. I do like the THX processing. Dolby Digital decoding is great. DTS would be a nice addition also. Great power. Considering the price, a close look at other receivers is recommended.

Paid $2500.00...Guess what? not worth it ! am/fm terrible... ac3 decoding is very slow....not upgradable to DTS....5 channel stero is good except I have to push the power up to high -24 to get the sound I want in an 11x15 room ( settings are as high as they can be) Cheryl Breaud .....deanna@lanyap.com

Denon AVR-5600
I've owned my 5600 for one and a half years and would definately recommend it to someone who doesn't need DTS or can't afford seperates. Build quality is outstanding and sound quality is incredible for Home Theater. If you're not a home theater buff you might want to pass on the 5600, however, and find a more musical receiver or save up for seperates.

Denon AVR-5600
I love my AVR5600, I've had a couple Yahama DSP-A1's but they proved to be unreliable for me (a bad shipment or something as they're still great units). I've had my Denon about 3 months now and havn't had a single problem. The imaging, and raw power are simply amazing, almost as if someone slipped several external amps into my system.

The Denon suffers from high THD, but good cable and great speakers make up for it. I'm impressed with the Denon simply because it sounds really good with excellent imaging and superior control as opposed to the Yahama.. For cable I'm using MIT terminator 4 interconnects, and Kimber Silver for the speakers.. (The speakers are Klipsh premier synergy, and a Carver sunfire sub)

On a 1 to 10 Denon is a 9.8, if they can get the THD down and can allow you to hook-up additional decoders (DTS etc) then they will have control of the market..

If you want power and stability, go with the Denon.
