Just listening to the near perfection these speakers produce lifts my spirit when I´m worn out from a days work. Volume up or volume low every note sounds just as accurate as the musicians intended, I guess. I sometimes feel the whole orchestra (classical music) or band (pop) is in my living room. That´s also a feature that I like very much, they are so versatile! Drums, guitar licks, delicate mandoline or piano or violin, it all sounds great!

Thiel CS 2.3
I recently heard the 2.3's in a well respected local audio dealer's showroom. Although I own Magnepans, I do occassionally swap them out for Vandersteens in my house, therefore I do have some frame of reference to evaluate the Thiels. The dealer had very similar electronics to my setup (ARC). I was very pleased with what I heard. On vocals, the singers were very articulated, natural, not sibilant. On acoustic instruments, the attack and decay was very convincing, being able to hear the natural vibrations in the instruments without harshness or smear. The focus was easy. Bass was relatively light, but it did not matter as the important factors, presentation and quality, where there in droves, easy but full of refinement. A fun experience to say the least. Might be a bit expensive, but the best always is. Cheap electronics will not work here. Different than my Maggies, but I would not hesitate to own them.

Thiel CS 2.3
Fast and live sound. Recommend using tube pre-amp and a neutral power amp (I use a Plinius SA50 and the Herron Pre-Amp - which is very nice).

Quite accurate and the support from Jim and Kathy is amazing (take that, Richard Vandersteen!!) The bass is tight and fast - usually not enough for the bass hungry folks,,,so use a sub-woofer! Vandersteen's 2Q is a great, fast woofer that can keep up with the Thiels.

The 2.3 outclass speakers in the $4,000 range. The only critisism is the average sound of the Thiels if matched with mid-fi amps.

Thiel CS 2.3
As close to live as I've heard. I can't really say anything better than that. Very flat resoponse, very clean and not bright or etched. But it will play exactly what goes into it so don't skimp on the eletronics. The 2.3 needs a good amp to handle the low ohm load (check your amp specs. if the watts out at 4 ohms is close to or double the 8 ohm output it shouldn't have a problem if it is the same or only slightly higher you may not have a good fit for these speakers - this pointer not valid for tube amps though they usually like higher ohm loads). The speaker uses a first order crossover so that all of the music is reproduced in phase, but this means you should be fairly far away from the speaker (10-12 feet is best) so that the multiple drivers output can mix.

These speakers image very well, so don't stick them right next to the TV against the wall. Four feet from the back wall and one third of the distance of the room width from the side wall (closer to the side wall if you use a center channel or have a large room) is a good starting point. Also experiment with toe in, though you may not need much (0-5 degrees) to achive a stable image. All in all a great speaker.
